Christ Asleep during the Tempest
This artwork in the form of painting was made by an artist called Eugene Delacroix who was a Frenchman, and he lived in 1798-1863 in Paris. The painting was made in the year 1853, and its size is 20*24 inches. This painting by Delacroix was inspired by a story in the New Testament about faith. When Jesus and his disciples were sailing in the sea, there was an incident where the boat seemed to capsize, and the disciples became terrified. The painting shows terrified disciples being scolded by Christ for not having trust in their Providence (THE MET, 2018). This story that inspired Delacroix making him do the painting is found in the New Testament in the Gospels of Mathew 8:23-27, Luke 8:22-25 and Mark 4:36-41. The story inspired Delacroix due to the theme of faith.
Looking at Delacroix in person, it is said that he was not religious and throughout his life he was sceptical. In his line, he dealt more on issues concerning morality, faith and justice and that is why he took a step to tell the story Christ and his disciples concerning faith. Delacroix has done a lot of works that touch on Christian subjects. This painting that shows Christ being asleep during the Tempest was made for collectors and friends. However, the way the art appears is not in its original form. The present art seems to have been done for a Parisian art dealer by the name of Francis Petit (Dunn et al., 2018). The message from the art, however, remains the same, and it tries to communicate the issues of faith, more so when one has been tested, and how steadfast one may stand during difficult times.
