Cicero

Roman Philosopher

Natural Talent

(Persuade, Audience Approval, Emotion)

“There are some men either so tongue tied, or so discordant in tone, or so wild and boorish in feature and gesture, which, even though sound in talent and in the art, they yet cannot enter the ranks of the orator”.

Quintilian

Roman Philosopher

Negative Impacts

Goal is not to persuade, but to speak well

(Values, Morals, Character)

A good man communicates honestly to help others, not manipulating for their own benefit

Quintilian

“But I would grant this, that the principals of a good and upright life should be the responsibility of the citizen who is fitted for the administration of public and private matters, who can guide cities by his councils, fortify them with laws, and correct them with his judgements, who is surly none other than the orator”.

Peter Ramus

French Philosopher

Believed Oration was an artform

Morality does not belong with art

Wrote “ Arguments in Rhetoric against Quintillian

Peter Ramus Response

Quintilian has added all kinds of things to rhetoric that do not belong to it. this is not what rhetoric itself is about, as an art. I assert indeed that such a definition of an orator seems to me to be useless and stupid: Why? Because a definition of any artist which covers more than is included in the rules of his art is defective. For the artist must be defined according to the rules of his art, and nothing further. One who teaches geometry is not defined as skilled in measurement and medicine. Why not? Because there is no precept in geometry which teaches how to cure illnesses. The definition of an artist which covers more than what is included within the limits of the art is faulty.
