JTCC300 Online Oral Presentation - Communicating with Lay Audiences Assignment

Oral Presentation (75 points) You will prepare an oral presentation that is based in some way on your semester paper. You may choose to present a summary of your paper, or you may prepare a presentation on some specific aspect of your paper. The audience for this presentation is not the same as the audience for your final technical document; instead, this audience is an interested lay audience. You must complete two parts for this Oral Presentation. Part I  (25 points) You will prepare a PowerPoint or comparable presentation. In this presentation, you must include the following elements:

· Some form of graphical element.

· The format of the slides is up to you, but should indicate to your audience the structure of your presentation. You may add transitions and other effects to your slides, but too many bells and whistles can be distracting.

· A total of 4 - 6 slides is a reasonable number of slides for a brief presentation.

Part II  (25 points) You will prepare a speaking outline. This is an outline of the presentation, including the introduction, body, and conclusion. Attach a brief audience analysis to the beginning of the outline that includes the education, interests, and relevant information about your lay audience. The speaking outline should be written in an outline format, and should be 2 pages long. In the introduction:

· You must capture the attention of your audience in the introduction. Be sure to find a way to relate the topic to your audience.

· You must introduce your topic in the introduction. Be sure that the audience knows exactly what you will be talking about.

· You should preview your main points in the introduction. This helps the audience follow your presentation.

In the body:

· You must use a clear organization in the body of the presentation.

· You must use good transitions.

· You must adapt the information to the level of your anticipated audience.

· Avoid having too many, or too few, main points. Generally, three main points is about right for a ten-minute talk.

In the conclusion:

· Provide some sort of transition to the conclusion: Let your audience know that you're done presenting the bulk of the information and that the presentation is coming to an end.

· Provide some sense of completion: You might summarize your main points, refer back to your introduction, or suggest something new for the audience to think about. Whatever you do, try to think in terms of having your audience think about and remember your main issues.

· You must end the presentation clearly: Find some way to tell your audience that the body is concluded.

Part III (25 points)   submit link in comments area

You will videotape yourself giving this presentation and upload the video to YouTube. You must provide the link along with your speaking outline and PPT presentation. You can either have someone videotape you or use a webcam. Be sure to speak in a clear voice and use techniques discussed in the lesson and in the textbook. Don't worry about rerecording for minor hiccups in your presentation — just adjust as you would if you were in front of the class.

Tips for Your Speech

· You must be within the time limit – minimum of three (3) minutes but absolutely no more than five (5) minutes.

· Introduce yourself and explain to us what kind of final project paper you did – and what you set out to find or do.

· Use clear organization in moving through the presentation.

· Use good transitions to indicate the organization of the talk to your audience.

· Adapt the information to the level of a general (but interested) audience — your classmates.

· Make sure we know the outcome and any interesting conclusions or recommendations.

· End the presentation clearly and professionally. Don’t say, “Well, that’s it” or “I’m done now, yuk, yuk.” You can use outline notes, but don’t read the presentation.
