Presentation Tactics
Maintaining The Audience Attention
By Xingru Wu
Introduction
Maintaining an audience’s attention is an important part of effective communication with the audience.
The presentation tactics determine the level of engagement with the audience and thus their attention.
Visual Presentation
A good presentation should incorporate visual aid to capture the audience.
The visual could include a film, a power point or pictures at intervals to keep the audience enthralled.
A well done presentation expounds the message to the audience in a mesmerizing manner where they keep looking for more.
Audience Engagement
A good presentation is not monotonous but an exchange between the audience and the presenter.
The presenter should involve the audience such as asking open ended questions rather than yes or no questions.
This gives the audience the chance to both speak their mind while engaging in debate in the topic.
In this presentation for example, the students can chip in on other methods of keeping them attentive.
Create a Story
While a presentation is conveying information, a good presentation targets information retention.
A story is more likely to be remembered than a lecture.
However, the story has to be appealing yet informational.
Time Limit
The presentation should be as time conscious as possible which reduces the chances of boring the audience.
The presenter should also avoid time wasting and digressing.
He or she should focus on the topic at hand without diverting. This ensures the audience does not misconstrue the message.
The presenter should maximize the information provided within the allocated time.
Presentations are a way of dispersing information to a large audience and their attention is extremely important.
The above mentioned tactics may help maintain their attention while dispersing the information.
At this point, I would like to ask the audience, my peers, to add on the tactics mentioned above.
