Annotated Bibliography – Oprah Winfrey
American Decades. Ed. Judith S. Baughman, Victor Bondi, Richard Layman, Tandy McConnell, and Vincent Tompkins. Vol. 10: 1990-1999. Detroit, MI: Gale, 2001.
Oprah Winfrey, who is a very successful actress, talk-show host and philanthropist is a prime example of someone who has overcome many struggles in life. However, she was not born into fame. Growing up in Kosciusko, Mississippi, she was born into a less fortunate family who did not have much (Gale, 2001.) It is known that as a child, she was abused and was forced to run away at one point (Gale, 2001.) She plays a major role in helping the lives of others. She does this by talking about personal issues that others may be going through, in order to empower other women. Also, she serves as a role model, not only for African American women, but for a plethora of people (Gale, 2001.) Throughout her life she has overcome many struggles including poverty and being raped at a very young age. One of the main reasons why she has become so successful despite her rough childhood, is she always kept a positive mindset no matter the situation. It is very clear that the platform she has now is used to help other better themselves and overcome hardships.
