Poverty discussion that I did in class

Hello everyone,

My county is Alameda. Poverty rate is 15.4% (+/-0.9).

Number of people is poverty is 247,700 (+/-15,100).

Child poverty Rate is 16.7% (+/-1.7).

Poverty (CPM) threshold, family of 4 that rents: $34,314.

The poverty rate for Alameda county definitely looks below the average level. Child Poverty rate is just insane. The CPM is so low at 34,314. That means families lack enough resources to meet basic needs.

I think there are several things that could be done to address this issue of poverty in Alameda county or any other county with high poverty rate. Increase to HUD and implement a better shelter to housing transition. If we reduce homelessness and or affordability problems there will be more housing security for people. Programs by government should be designed to help families move out of poverty. Homeless kids should be put in schools which is their legal right. More Educated kids will result in less poverty and homelessness problems. Law makers should be special programs and funding's for kids belonging to areas with a high poverty rate or gang affiliated families.  Low rent programs should have more funding's than currently. Right now to qualify for low income apartments you have to wait from 1-5 years in que. To qualify for one a family of 4 can not be making more than 79k. But if the family makes less then 113k they are considered poor in Bay area. These numbers need to be changed and considered according to the area and its poverty rate. Rates are increasing vert fast. One bed apartment is anywhere between 2000-3000 in Bay area currently. That is way above the average compared to Sacramento, Fresno or farther counties and states. That is insane. Rents should be lowered.

Better jobs should be created. Maintaining a full and tight employment economy is the best way to fight poverty. The current unemployment rate is  3.1 for Alameda County. When the labor market is strong or tight, it should help those at the bottom to get better jobs with high pay rates. Disadvantaged workers get a chance to secure higher positions and wages as their employers are forced to compete with labor. This can help those workers to bring their families out of poverty. It all depends on demands and service level of the company. The more demand,  more service=more employment opportunities. More employment opportunities=less poverty.

The homelessness discussion we did for the class :

This week's topic is a very serious issue in United States "Homelessness". Through all these class materials, site seminar and peer discussions, we all got to see every different perspective of homelessness. It is a very unfortunate thing to happen to anyone. It could happy to literally anyone. United states is the most privileged country in the world. You get so many opportunities to make money here. As an immigrant I have learned that we have many more rights here then in the countries we come from. But still people end up in bad situations or making wrong choices because of their troubles background. Parent's divorcing, abuse/violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, extreme life events, mental illness, depression, bankruptcy, poverty, and in very rare chances laziness, all these factors could lead towards homelessness. Even though it is easy to blame government for these economical issues but the problem starts within us. We as people tend to ignore these issues in our society or are afraid to help someone out of all those situations. The rich wants to get richer and not spend a single penny on poor and needy. Someone with a mental sickness or a criminal background are looked bad upon. They are pushed away from the society into darkness. Obviously if they commit a very serious crime then they should be in the jail but people with minor criminal record are not considered safe and not offered jobs.

The "The California Dream is tough to afford if you're under 40," video is actually 100% and current situation. It is impossible to own a house before your 40's in bay area specially. May be towards the Fresno, Sacramento, Stockton, Yuba City or Tracy side. Me and my parents have been trying to get a house together since past 3 years in  Fremont. But it seemed impossible so we started looking towards Tracy area this year and were able to find a house twice as big and half the price of houses in Fremont or San Jose area. It is hell of a commute but we have no other choice. We either could stay living on rent and pay a lot of rent monthly, or we get a house and make payments towards something that we will have in future. Current house rent for 3 bed and 2 bath is $3000 average. The apartments are worse. 3 bed and 2 bath in Fremont can cost you 3-4k per month
