Procedure
Calculate your household daily water usage based on the information given below. These figures are estimates. There is a tremendous amount of variation between fixtures. For example, if you have a water-efficient showerhead the water flow will be about half the estimate below. If you have a water-efficient toilet the water used per flush will be as low as 1.5-2 gallons per flush.
The amount of water used for brushing teeth, shaving, hand & face washing, and dishwashing will vary significantly based on the time spent and the faucet setting. The amount of water used on the yard will vary depending on the area in need of water.
Activity 1: Household Water Use
For shared activities like washing clothes, calculate your share of the water. For example, if there are 4 people in your house and the washing machine is estimated to use 40 gallons per load, your share is 40/4 = 10 gallons.
Use the data in the first table to fill in the “Estimated gallons per use or unit of time,”. Change the figures in that column if you have more accurate data about your personal water use.

Activity 2: Food Water Use
One thing that people do not consider is the amount of water used to make their food. People do not see the maintenance & processing of their food therefore they do not realize the amount of water that it takes to bring the food to their plate.
List all of the foods eaten for one day and then use the Food Inventory Worksheet to calculate the amount of water used per meal per day. **If a food is not shown, use one that is similar.

3. Water diversions are highly controversial. They consist of a series of structures that intercept water and deliver it to another area, usually where water is in very high demand. What is your opinion of water diversion projects?
