One-Way Video Interview Assignment Instructions
Total points: 150 (Preparation Worksheet: 75; Presentation: 75)
Target time:
3:00 – 4:00 minutes (acceptable duration range without penalty is 3:00 – 4:30 min) . Your lab instructor will stop watching your video after 4 ½ minutes. Videos that are shorter than 3:00 minutes do not have an acceptable amount of content and will automatically receive a maximum grade of C, regardless of how well delivered the content is.
Goals:
1) Research an organization you are interested in working for
2) Prepare your responses to the questions provided in the assignment folder on Blackboard. Use the Interview Preparation Worksheet to prepare your interview! You will turn it in for a grade as well.
3) Record your one-way interview with confidence
Follow these steps to complete your assignment:
Step 1: Choose an organization to research
For this assignment, you should pretend you are actually applying for a job at a company of your choice (or non-profit organization, government agency, graduate or professional school, etc.).
· Find out as much as you can about the organization you choose. Start with their website! Do a google search on the organization to see what else you can find out from news articles or other sources.
· Decide which of the interview questions it makes sense for you to focus on, with your specific organization in mind.
Step 2: Look at the interview questions
We’ve provided the questions in the assignment folder on Blackboard. You will NOT answer ALL of the questions. There are three categories of questions – you should answer ONE question from EACH category. Choose 3 questions total to answer, according to which things you want to highlight about yourself, as well as the specific organization you are “applying to.”
Step 3: Complete Your Preparation Worksheet
Once you decide on an organization to research, you’ll need to organize your information and process everything to prepare for your presentation.
The Interview Preparation Worksheet has several parts. It is a detailed assignment that will require some time and attention to detail. It is worth equal value to the recorded presentation itself because we want you to work hard on the interview prep!
The complete instructions for preparation are in the Blackboard folder. The Worksheet is also in the folder as a separate document (download that file!), but here is the general preview: 1) Compile your research about the organization you are applying to (this will include source citations), 2) Write responses to your chosen interview questions, 3) Reflect on what your chosen questions are trying to assess, and 4) Create your speaking outline for your presentation.
Step 4: Rehearse
Pretend this a real interview for a job you really want! How well do you want to communicate in this interview so that the interviewers are impressed enough to bring you in for an in-person interview?!
Step 5: Record your one-way interview
This is your opportunity to practice all of the elements of speaking you have learned this semester. You want to showcase your personality and come across as someone the company wants to hire. Think about the elements of good deliver and put them to use.
Watch your interview after you finish recording. If you feel like you can do it better, re-record!
MAKE SURE YOU RECORD YOUR VIDEO IN THE CORRECT FOLDER ON PANOPTO. VIDEOS IN THE INCORRECT FOLDER WILL NOT BE GRADED.
Step 6: Submit Your Preparation Worksheet on Blackboard
