One Act Play – Concept and Rough Outline

You will provide a rough plan of your abbreviated one-act play. You are not writing the play, but plotting out the setup and context.

Complete the following:

1. First, like the beginning of the script of "Pancakes," type and list out the Characters, Setting, Time and a brief description of the opening scene, like the format to the beginning of "Pancakes" on p. 274-275 (I’ll put screen shot for those pages below)

2. Then in a free-write, explain what is happening in your scene and what the underlying problem is underneath the scene. Think about how "Pancakes" is a simple setup of one person eating pancakes and the underlying problem starts to appear with the lines "Buddy: I live here too, you know. Same: Just barely. Buddy: You gonna bring that up again?" This shows the tension but as readers we don't know that this is about Buddy owing Sam money (Use this kind of setup). This is exacerbated and played out by Sam wanting Pancakes and then propelled forward by Buddy proposing a demeaning solution--that Sam should shine one shoe per pancake. The scene escalates by Sam suggesting Buddy use his tongue to shine his shoes. The two argue about what is goodwill, God, and charity. Buddy ends up killing Sam.

Do you see how the above could be a example free-write sketch of your own homework this week? Write about the scene and conflict like this, and add some ideas of what will cause more tension between the characters on their underlying problem.

Using the notes on drama from this week, write a 200-300-word draft of your dramatic situation, characters, context, and conflict.

Give some idea to how it will end. DO NOT end your scene in death, because, well, it honestly can be an easy out for too many stories and scenes.
