Paper#(Rough/Final Draft): Marriage: Is it Important or Not?

In our society, there is a lot of pressure regarding marriage. We are always put under a lot of pressure from our family and friends to get married. But, there are many women in the society who would like to stay single forever without getting married. People have different opinions for the institute of marriage. To some, marriage is important and to some, it is not important. This kind of opinions which are opposing to each other generates argument or debate on this topic. Dorian Solot in her essay ‘On Not Saying “I Do”’ has illustrated that in order to keep a relationship and retain happiness in the relationship, it is not essential to get married. It is considered by Dorian that a lot changes when a marriage occurs between a couple. Stephanie Coontz’s ‘For Better, For Worse’ illustrates that today marriage is being perceived in a very different way than before. Even though traditional family’s values are still promoted by marriage the attitude of people for it has changed largely. The author has mentioned that the reason for this change is the loss of the authority of marriage on the matters of division of labor gender wise, sex and parenthood. The shift in love, the social norms losing its strength and the empowerment of women (Coontz, 407) can be seen as the results of the disposability of the institution of marriage. Although the two essays differ from each other mainly in their style of writing and the ideas of the respective authors the topics of both the essays are quite similar. Both of it is about marriage and how the notion of marriage has changed over the years whether it is regarding the necessity of marriage or putting people’s sole focus on marriage. It can be said from both the readings that the personal emotion between people is more important since this is what decides whether the two people will be happy and healthy whether they are married or staying single.
