Ethical dilemma

It is very important to thoroughly read the Learning Objective for any chapter to help you better understand what you are to KNOW when you are finished reading the chapter. Chapter 3 (pages 1 & 2) will start off with some very important scenarios that will help encourage your critical thinking skills because you will need to ask yourself how would I handle that situation. You must consider how to recognize a ethical issue and what should be done to prevent it from happening. Also in chapter 3 you will discover well known ethical dilemmas and not so well known ones that you need to be aware of. After you have read the required reading (Chapters 3 and 4), you will better understand what Discussion Question 1 is asking of you. Be sure to follow the APA guidelines when forming your initial posting (Due: Thursday—initial posting and Monday for response).

Name of Discussion: Ethical Dilemma (Due Thursday)

Gonzalez-Padron (2015) wrote that…

“Ethical dilemmas occur when a situation requires an individual to choose among alternatives that create a values conflict among stakeholders. In these situations, a conflict develops between the personal moral philosophy of the employees and the organization’s goals or culture.”

Organizations are always at risk for ethical dilemmas of some kind. Without naming names (be cognizant of not naming anyone), explain how an organization similar to the one you currently work in or an organization that you may be aware of is at risk for ethical dilemmas. If you would prefer, use the Ashford University library and research ethical dilemmas. You will find many articles related to the nursing industry. Why is this? What other fields are at risk?

When Ethical Dilemmas occur

Gonzalez-Padron (2015) wrote that…

“Ethical dilemmas occur when a situation requires an individual to choose among alternatives that create a values conflict among stakeholders. In these situations, a conflict develops between the personal moral philosophy of the employees and the organization’s goals or culture.”

An example of an ethical dilemma

Back in the day, there was the temptation to take the organizational pens, paper, and notebooks home. Then came the Internet. People in the organization use the Internet to check their stocks, the news, to shop, and to post on social media. Is this misuse? Is this an ethical dilemma? That all depends on your organization’s policy on use of the Internet during work hours.

Ethical Compliance

Next, you will turn your attention to chapter 4 of the required reading. This chapter is all about compliance. You will read a lot of things you already know, but you could discover something that is new to you. Be sure to check out the learning objectives before reading the chapter to make sure you know what to look for and what to expect in the chapter. Now, that you have read the required reading (Chapter 4) you are better equipped to answer the discussion question 2 for this week. Be sure to follow the APA guidelines when forming your initial posting and response. (Due: Thursday—initial posting and Monday for response).

Ethics Issues and Compliance

According to Gonzalez-Padron (2015), employees are always in ethical situation and need to know how to handle it (Ch. 3 page 3). If your boss/employer ask you do something that you know is not ethical how would you handle the situation? Could money persuade you to do the wrong thing? Could a promotion have an influence on your decision making? What is your limit? Please keep these questions in mind as you read Chapter 3 and do DQ 1 for this week. Sidebar: What do you know about the Enron scandal?

Please refer to the library and you should find several articles that will help to enhance your knowledge base. Yes, it was several years ago, but you need to know plenty about it because it has plenty of ethical issues that caused the fall.

Name of Discussion: Ethics, Compliance, and Training (Due Thursday)

From a managerial ethics perspective and considering some of the areas that were brought up in the Week 2, DQ 1 discussion, consider the following statement by Hagel.

Hagel (2015) stated, “The demand for greater transparency from consumers and stakeholders across the world has pushed the areas of ethics and compliance up the corporate list of priorities in recent years. In addition, the risk to reputation and potential damage that can be done if evidence of unethical practice is discovered have increased significantly with the advent of social media.”

Also remember the legislation that was brought up in Chapter 4 of the textbook.

Your organization (you can represent any organization, McDonalds, Starbucks, ESPN, etc.) has asked you to create a training presentation to be presented next week (Week 3). Using the Hagel article, the Gonzales-Padron textbook, and at least two other journal articles, you will present an outline for your training as a response to this thread.

Your goal is to post an outline for training for your organization as a response to this thread.

Respond to at least two other students providing advise, and asking questions.

Ethical issues and compliance (Cont’d)

Have you ever thought about the status and scope of employee rights?

In the traditional view, all employees have the right to leave any job if they are not happy. And the employer has the right to tell the employee what to do if it pertains to the particular job. So, what is the legal principal behind this view point?

How does the right to privacy pertain to ethical issues and/or compliance?

What is the Sarbanes-Oxley Act? Why is it important to know something about it?

Conclusion

As you can see, a lot of information will come your way in Chapters 3 & 4. With that type of knowledge a lot of questions need to be thought about and answered. As you read more about ethic issues and compliance you will see that a lot of people refer to the collapse of the social contract between most companies and its employees.

What kind of strategy is needed to address challenges in determining an ethical issue in business? (Chapter 3)

After reading chapter 4, can you analyze how the standards play a role in global ethics and compliance?

Enjoy!!!
