This course emphasizes that businesses should try to be socially responsible, ecologically sustainable and reduce their carbon footprint. 3M Corp. is an example of one such successful company. It’s a fortune 100 company with sales of U$32.8 billion (2018) and produces a plethora of products (approx. 55,000). Scotch Tape and Post-It notes are only two of its more popular household brands/products.

3M publishes annual sustainability reports available on their website (www.3m.com). Your objective for this project is to choose a multinational/global company and compare their latest Sustainability Report with at least 1 more from 3-7 years in the past. Use these reports as well as other credible sources to write a thorough review summarizing how successful your company has been in implementing its sustainability programs.

Your report should cover the following topics:

1. Introduction to ecological sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals

2. Green Product Design

2a. Describe the guidelines for achieving environmentally friendly product design

2b. Discuss any product design system/methodology used

2c. Give some examples of successful green products or services your company offers

3. Eco Friendly Production Processes

3a. How does your company develop green production processes? Discuss.

3b. Give some example of any successful green manufacturing processes

4. Green Supply Chain Management (SCM)

4a. Supplier Selection process

4b. Supplier Developments

4c. Green Logistics Operations

5. Conclusion – Assess the sustainability success of your company so far and their future sustainability goals or targets

Your report should be 5 -7 pages max (excluding the quoted and bibliographic material). It should be prepared in MS Word using the APA format. It’s important that you write this report in your own words. The “Turnitin” Similarity Index (SI) of your report should be less than 10%.

This project is worth 15% of your term marks.

Final report is due at the start of Class 2 on week #12.
