Reflection Paper VII
Asian Americans Americanization Experiences
Instructions;
Provide a 2 page(s) critical evaluation discussion the below topics;
· Asian American’s, categorically, are the first minority group we have explored whose initial contact with the dominant-white group is defined primarily through voluntary initial contact through forms of immigration.
· Examining Asian-Americans successes in education, income and American middle-class standards, how does this initial contact distinction enlighten your understanding on the accessible pathways to Americanization between domestic colonialism and immigration?
· How does this clarification relate with Freire’s discussion on humanization and dehumanization – Chapter 1, and ethnic group’s successful social mobility towards Americanization acceptance?
· Each of the ethnic groups mentioned in the above have experienced some form of restriction to a racially segregated community, yet unlike African Americans, these other ethnic groups were able to maintain original culture and language. How important is culture-retention to affording Americanization through assimilation or cultural pluralism?
· Given all the above–re-evaluate Bill O’Reilley’s The Truth About White Privilege regarding to his remarks on “Asian Privilege”.
· Throughout Chapter 9, Marger (2015) discussed the differential Americanization integration experiences among the various ethnic-Asian American groups, whereas colorism (skin color), language, and physical features were identified as assimilation barriers for some ethnic-Asians over others. Most significant is the finding that Chinese and Japanese Americans experience higher levels of access through assimilation (marriage) than Southeast Asian ethnic groups.
· What does these different Americanization experiences say about the pressures of “whiteness”, assimilation, and Anglo-conformity for Asian-American ethnic groups compared to other ethnic minority groups?
· Does skin color, ethnic features, and language create a form of oppression as articulated through Freire allow for a dispossessing of an authentic-American identity in America?
· Evaluate the Model Minority identity through Freire to determine whether this ascribed identity is a form of oppression, dehumanization, and a prescription which elements the relationship of oppressed-oppressor between Asian-Americans and dominant-white society.
