Hello all,

Fortunately, I was gifted with a book from the Mayo Clinic when I discovered I was pregnant. The book details pregnancy through the baby’s first year. Even though I had some basic knowledge of what to expect, the required reading video for this discussion detailed a lot of astounding data. I had no idea that most babies as young as six months old possessed mathematical logic (Films Media Group, 2007). Babies have fantastic sponge-like brains; that is how my daughter learned two languages and could read by age three.

Nevertheless, at an early age, people would ask her how she got so bright. She would tell them her mommy consumed a large amount of broccoli. I love small children and their wit.

I was surprised to learn that infants have 100 billion neurons connected to neuron synapses, and throughout development, many are pruned for fine-tuning to become more detailed oriented (Films Media Group, 2007). In the first year of a baby’s life, environmental influences affect the well-being in which they grow (Berk, 2022); developing young minds is vital to academic and social success.

During prenatal and newborn stages of development, interaction is one key to a healthy developing mind. Daily engagement from conception on is encouraged for early developing minds (Films Media Group, 2022). Parents or caregivers should be mindful when designing an area for infants and toddlers to explore to ensure a safe learning environment (HHS, 2018).
