A description of our sampling (both the neutron and IKMT tows)
Lives beneath the seas level, bethos are impacted by the layers found in water sediments and water surface. In addition, swimmers or nektons are influenced by the water they merge with. Also, plant like structures referred to as planktons or phytoplankton and animal like structures known as zooplankton are impacted by water and the exchange takes place at the surface of the ocean. Therefore, often sampling and estimation of marine life, just as we did during the field trip, is perfectly done when working jointly with estimation of the physical and substance characteristics of the sea and the surface effects of water.
As an outcome of the nearby conversation of lives in oceans and its surrounding, researchers used various methods involving certain strategies to deal with marine sampling. Use of analytical strategies employs used of sampling instruments, remote detecting the surface containing living things by airplanes and satellites. Also situ was used to observe plants and animals in direct conversation with their own ecological unit in water. It’s becoming progressively important researchers undertake the delicacy of life forms and the hardness of sampling. lacking good technique and selection strategies implied that even then there is less information known about the variety, plentiful, population, and life phases of taken number of organisms of marine life.
The most common used sampler used is plankton nets and the midwater trawls which these nets are smaller in size compared to plankton net use. Also the nets used were made with mesh. The trawls don’t allow big organisms to pass through. During our sampling we realized that small nets can be used when a ship come to an end or travelling gradually while the big nets were used as the ship move at normal speed rate. Therefore, we concluded that plankton nets could be employed when sampling less than one depth.
During that period of our trip we used a method known as IKMT (IsaacKidd Midwater Trwal). We realized that midwater trawl is not commonly used, and was purposed for quick collection at a depth below the water surface and with a speed, such that the quickest fish in swimming could not escape from being trapped by the net. The trawls could be used at a speed of 9 km/hr. To moderate the tendency of standard net to surface at the back of towing vessel, a midwater trawl of the Isaacs-Kidd employed slanted plane surface which was then fixed at the back of the net entrance as depressor. Therefore, the trawl was made cone like having pentagonal opening with a round end. In the interior of the net an extra net was placed as covering. A steel ring was therefore, secured towards the end of the net to maintain the shape. In addition, a bigger perforate was then attached by drawing on the underneath of the net to hold the samples unspoiled.
During the trip we had at the ocean, we attempted three sampling namely IsaacKiddMidwater (IKMT). On day time the depth of water was 100 meters and at night time, the depth was 950 meters deep. We went ahead and did the third sampling during the night time, to compare it with the one we caught in day time, however, at this moment the depth was 100 meters.
