Major characters and what they do

Figure 1: Attic Red-Figure Kylix - Judgment of Paris[footnoteRef:1] [1: "Paris," Encyclopedia Mythica, (accessed 5Th March 2025). https://pantheon.org/articles/p/paris.html 1 Encyclopedia Mythica, "Paris."]

Figure 2 (Jack Levine's Modern Interpretation - Judgment of Paris)1

Man (Paris-like character): A man in casual attire, with sunglasses, seemingly deciding between three women. Three Women: Wearing a seductive dress and having a serious conversation with the man, who can be interpreted as representing modernized forms of Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.

Action: The figure shows a contemporary social scene, with the man having a decision to make in a nod to Paris's mythical judgment.

Important Actions/Events: In Figure 1, Paris is deciding between the three goddesses in a beauty competition and ends up awarding Aphrodite with the golden apple, causing the Trojan War. In Figure 2, in a contemporary reinterpretation, a man appears to be deciding between three women, mirroring Paris's decision1.

Differences

Figure 1 is mythological in origin, and Figure 2 is a modern-day reinterpretation.

Figure 1 consists of divine beings, while Figure 2 features human, perhaps social, archetypes.

The stakes in Figure 1 lead to war, and Figure 2 suggests social or individual, not mythic, repercussions.

Key Setting Details: Figure 1 is in a mythological Greek background with traditional attire and symbolic elements of godhood. Figure 2 is in a city scene with street attire, streetlights, and a casual encounter.

Similarities

Both depict a male figure choosing among three women.

Both share themes about power, influence, and beauty.

Both environments emphasize decision-making and decision outcomes.
