Introduction

Child development is crucial, it helps a child to interact with people, and objects in his or her environment. Many times people spend time with children but do not observe how they develop as they become older. Children become part of people’s lives and the main objective is to make sure they get all the basic needs to grow. For a long time, parents are heard saying that children grow fast. Parents realize that their children have grown once they have acquired the ability to do many things independently (Paris, 2018). However, getting a chance to observe a child was enlightening for me. Many things go unnoticed but play a crucial role in the learning process of a child. Fortunately for me, I had a chance to monitor my 5-year-old nephew. Many times, I do not like it when my nephew wants to spend time with me because I find him a nuisance. Nonetheless, it was an honor to pay attention to a child because there was a lot to learn.

I had a chance to observe my nephew for a week, every day after school. One thing I realized about my nephew is that he liked being at home instead of school. One of the factors thar had led to him loving home is all the equipment available for play. It took only two days of showing an interest in my nephew’s affairs to build a better relationship between us. Unlike in the past, this time round I wanted to be around my nephew something that changed his attitude towards me. My sister also talked about an improved relationship between us. In the process, I learned that my nephew was learning through play and some of the time it was very hurting (Paris, 2018). For instance, one of the behaviors I noticed is that my nephew loved to climb. One day he climbed on a table and fell. The next day I tried to ask him to climb on the table and pick for me a toy but he refused, saying that he would fall again.

Therefore, after observing my nephew, I agreed with the theory of Vygotsky, that development is a continuous process. Initially, my nephew did not understand the risk of climbing on the table. However, after the incidences, the experience was not good and he understood the consequences. According to Vygotsky, brain development and experiences contribute to the growth of a child. The environment in this case played a crucial role in the learning process of my nephew. If my nephew did not fall, he would never understand the risk of climbing a high place. It is through play that my nephew was making many discoveries (Paris, 2018). It was clear in his place that he understood gravity but not in scientific terms. However, gravity played a crucial role in many attempts he made as he played. Social developments were also evident because my interest in my nephew’s affair made him include me in his endevours. Many times, I forgot I was observing and we would play for hours.

Conclusion

An opportunity to observe my nephew’s behavior supported the cognitive theory. Within a week, my nephew had learned a lot. He was curious, wanted to talk very much about his environments as well as things that were accepted. It was clear that a child goes through thoughts, observation, and exploration of things in the environment. Thus. An environment of a child plays a crucial role in development.
