Introduction
Amongst the commonly discussed issues in the US within the past few decades is obesity. Obesity has posed as a major shortcoming within the American society and deserves an immediate, careful and systematic solution. Obesity as a term is used to refer to the weight of the human body that exceeds the healthy set standards. In the overalls population, 65 percent of the overall adult has surpassed the optimum weight and half of them are now obese. The ratio of overweight children is smaller, standing at 15 percent. A similar ratio of them is heading to becoming overweight, and consequently obese. Obesity has become a national issue affecting all generations and making the upcoming generations to be the unhealthiest amongst all. In the US, one child in every five children at the age of 2-5 children are struggling with either obesity or overweight. For prevention measures, the majority of young children spend much of their time away from home, thereby making ECE setting the best place for them. In every three out of five children at the age bracket of 3-5 years are on weekly non-parental care. Obesity has become a national issue affecting all generations and making the upcoming generation to be the unhealthiest amongst all.
There exist many proofs that depict obesity to serious health issues in recent times. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and Cardiovascular are some of them. These obesity-related diseases resulted to close to 400,000 deaths in America in the year 2004. Although the conditions may not necessarily cause death, they play a big role in decreasing the quality of one's life. Obesity’s aesthetics effects, on the other hand, have been discovered to cause low self- esteem as well as depression. It is very unfortunate to note that the criteria used by people in passing judgments in today's generation are stereotyped; being created by local adverts as well as lifestyles. Within the social interactions of the working environment and learning institutions, a person who is thin but fit is highly rated, liked and more preferred than an overweight person. These institutions create a negative impression and mentality over overweight people in society. These situations create a negative impression on the victim. The choice of nutrition that is adopted by overweight people has a big impact in relation to their health as well as serving a heavy blow to the US economy. In the year 2003 alone, the US government spent $23 billion in the medication of obesity-related issues. Half of the cost was serviced by the taxpayers through Medicare and Medicaid.
The government of the United States has been encouraging the physicians to counsel the obese patients in order to lose weight, though studies show the counseling programs by the physicians are rare. The counseling quality and motivation by obese patients is a great motivation for losing weight by obese people. A survey to assess how the physicians use counseling 5As tactics and how the patients responded to this initiative revealed the following. One, the patients revealed that they got motivated in their crave to lose weight. Two, they reported there were a commitment to eating healthy food. Lastly, they revealed that they would strictly observe exercise sessions. Up to 30% of patients across the US are confused with regard to dietary information. Weighty counseling sessions by the physicians are commonly lacking, leaving the responsibility to other professionals within the sector of health. Effective overweight counseling starts with education to patients over various topics, especially on dietary habits.
In this case, the intention of the counseling sessions is to achieve a desired and sustained weight. However, a weight loss that is sustainable is a challenge as up to 95% of the patients who undergo weight management soon recover the lost weight, in a span of five years. Some of the patients may get surprised that even after eating less, their weight isn’t dropping. This is a normal case because ones the brain detects a reduced intake of food they will make an effort to compensate this deficiency by spending less energy (Iyer , 245). Counseling programme for an obese patient ought to address the patient's unrealistic expectations. The physicians should be ready to handle unrealistic expectations from the patients. In this case, there is a need for them to stress that even a loss of 3% of the weight loss is a very significant achievement. Weight loss of 4.5 % reduces two the risk of contracting two types of diabetes by 65%. It is as well good to encourage obese patients to undergo counseling. An obese patient who undertakes in the cognitive therapy in behavioral change, regular exercises and adopting strict dietary habit stand a chance to lose an extra 11 pounds as when compared with patients who only stick to the exercise and diet.2 in every 5 obese patients succeeds in weight loss in long term base. This only happens when interventions like drugs, counseling bad diet are put in use.
The change process has been used in a way so as to be in a position to understand the reduction in driving and also cessation. As many people get old, they voluntarily restrict or stop their driving. This change may be happening in various stages, as outlined by the model of Transtheoretical in the change of behavior (Kolwaski , 59). This study analyzed how drivers who are old change behavior by interviewing drivers at the age of 71-94. In this research, the driving behavior was divided into two levels. The ones who changed driving as they get old and those who did not change. Those who changed did so through their own put restrictions, referred to as "gradual restrictors". Those who made a plan to stop driving, "preparers”. The participants who demonstrated an unwillingness to shift from driving comprised those drivers who had put restrictions in driving for a long period of time "consistent' as well as those ones who demonstrated no change "The non-changers). The result of this study provided that within driving, TM was identified. It was however found that the change within the driving behavior was needed. In this study, it’s necessary to continue with investigating factors that may affect driving in old people. By facilitating self-regulation to an individual, it may encourage the other older adults not to stop driving, thus enhancing the mobility of the old thus enhancing quality life. The same case, it is good to continuously motivate people who have decided to undergo physical exercises voluntarily. We should not just allow those not willing to remain physically active but we should play a role to make them realize the importance of physical exercise in relation to their body health.
The study comprised an investigation of the differences within the Transtheoretical model, commonly known as TTM, as a Construct in those who maintained relapsed and those who failed to change in exercise behavior guidelines. In aiming for a target behavior, the study involved two groups. The results obtained from the two groups within the TTM constructs revealed that the lasers are likely to make use of TTM variables as the same case with those who maintained, those with self-efficacy not included. The non-changers used the available TTM variables in a lesser way as when compared to the maintainers. The study revealed that the relapses tend to remain more active as when compared to the non-changers in relation to the user of processes change. The responses that are poor in relation to interventions can be easily predicted by poor engagements within the realm the change processes. It was, later on, discovered that the relapses eventually reverted to physical exercises (Lipschitz , 601). This effort by them shows that the effort they put in order to adjust was far much better than the non-changer stable groups. The suture studies hold that focus on engagement treatments strategies in order to help the no-changers who were stable in the process of initiating change as well as uplift the relapses to uphold gains in treatment.
Regular body exercises, good nutrition and having a healthy body weight comprise the overall health rating of a person. When combined, these factors can greatly help to decrease an individual’s likelihood to develop a serious health complication, for example, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke diabetes, and cancer. A healthy balanced diet and a series of body exercise are important in the maintenance of a healthy weight as well as help regulate an individual’s health condition so that it does not worsen as time goes by.
A study has revealed that the majority of the Americans fails to observe a balanced diet and as well fail to be physically active in the required levels in order for them to uphold proper health. In the US, adults take fruits in about 1.2 in each and every day and 1.6 times for vegetables. The adolescent intake has been found to be lower than this. Within all gender, the Americans intake of vegetables and fruits is below the required threshold. In addition to this, 81.4% of adults and 81.7% of adolescents fail to get the required physical activities. As a consequence of this behavior, there has been a drastic increase in the obesity levels within the United States. Today, 35% of the adult population and 17% of adolescents have diseases related to overweight and obesity. Making sure that all the American citizens take health matters seriously, engage in physical activities and striving to attain a body weight that is healthy is a very important thing in order to guarantee the health of every American citizen.
The effects
Overweight and obese people experience prejudices and negative stereotypes with regard to their weight. This is with regard to their work, education, interpersonal relationship and in the media setting (Rudolph , 2064). These negative experiences are categorized as pervasive WB, and they are associated with some aspects of maladjustment as well as ineffective weight loss. As a result, they have been found to cause negative prejudices. Research conducted was aimed at investigating whether healthy eating and being physically active has got an ability to increase the implicit or explicit WB. The results of the study revealed that exercising habits, as well as body exercise, have a big impact on WB change.
Weight adjustment programs are linked to behavior change. These programs require demands a theoretically based framework In this case, two theories, the Organizational development, and transtheoretical development theories are significant in the aspect of weight management ran theoretical development model checks how an individual frequently apply the programs related to weight management. Organization development theory, on the other hand, is much more complicated because it applies the change of behavior within the system level. However, both models have got strengths and weaknesses (Wu , 205).
Myth Don’t Exist
Although obesity is a national issue of concern, it doesn’t affect all generations, including the future ones, because we have the ability to improve the present in order to make the future much better. Many people across the nation view obesity as a disease but in the real sense, it’s not. It is a condition that leads to regeneration of diseases. It has not been proven whether obesity is genetic, inherited or self-imposed. Some people imply that obese people should not be held accountable for their appearance. However, I find obese people responsible for the way they appear. As such, obesity is not accidental; it is a condition that is self-imposed that comes out due to destruction. Nancy Sprague states that obesity occurs due to the consumption of excess calories and failing to engage in enough body exercises. In this case, overweight people are much aware of the changes their bodies undergo until they become obese, yet they take no control measure. This is to mean that obesity can be protected by an individual. An increased food ratio should be correspondingly be followed by an increased physical exercise. It sounds irrational for people to claim that obesity just happen randomly and the obese people should not be blamed for their condition.
To avert a possible health crisis for future generations, Harbor Care Health and Wellness Centre has embarked on a sharp campaign to influence the obese people. The facility is providing top-rated health services as well as accessible healthcare as well as health education. The services offered by the facility are much affordable and easily accessible to clients. The nurses and other clinic officials teach clients how to live healthy lives and maintenance. They aim to make a difference and alter the high number of obesity cases by initiating many fitness scenes across the country. Once these fitness facilities will be completed, the management of the clinic expects to be a high enrollment. This is expected to lead to increased physical exercise, resulting in a drastic fall in obesity-related disorders.
In the US today, many citizens are being tempted to lead unhealthy lifestyles by preferring to eat at fast food chains that offer snacks like cookies and chips. Robert Wood Foundation made a revelation that by 2030, there will be a very high rate of obesity across all the States of the US. The increased obesity rate will consequently result in many diseases cost which will make the cost of health to rise drastically. The foundation also reported that national security would be affected as many citizens will be overweight to enroll in the military.
Why the Myth Matters
There are a variety of reasons why the study on obesity matters. First, we get to know the rank of America in the list of the most obese people in the world. In this, the Americans are linked number two. Obesity in the US comprises the second condition that leads to deaths that can be avoided. As I have listed there above, obesity is a personal achievement resulting from excessive eating, malnutrition and failing to conduct sufficient exercises and. America as a nation promotes obesity indirectly through eating contests where snacks and other unhealthy foods like hotdogs are involved. This demonstrates that in America, eating is viewed as a hobby. As a hobby, it means that many people have developed an addiction.
Psychologists provide that eating excessively results from emotions when people fess sad depressed, lonely or frustrated they are likely to eat so much in search of satisfaction. Emotional eating may result in weight gain that is undesirable. A further failure to engage in physical exercise is a ground, conducive for obesity to pop up. Amongst the reasons for failing to exercise include laziness, demands for work, striving to settle bills amongst other demands. By engaging in simple tasks like biking, walking, biking, or jogging for some minutes in each and every day will highly reduce changes to get obese. Another exercise that is much common is swimming. Swimming result in a healthy body. Exercise is the best remedy for many illnesses affecting the many people in modern time.
In addition to this, malnutrition is another cause of obesity. People become malnutrition when the diets they feed on do not include the dietary requirement like carbohydrates, calories, and proteins. Malnutrition occurs when there is overfeeding or when the junk food consumed is beyond adequate requirements. Fat foods especially the ones offered in the restaurants are not the best because it is deficient of fiber and protein. It comprises empty calories, fat, and carbohydrates. Alcohol consumption also contributes to malnutrition. When moderately consumed, alcohol is not bad. The only problem is that some people consume too much of it thus interfering with the health and nutrition value of an individual.
There is a dire need to come up with a public health approach aimed at developing strategy that is publically based that aims at avoiding excess weight. Such factors should aim at overcoming lifestyle barriers at the environmental, social economic personal levels, as well as getting the concerned players. Effective policies aimed at reducing obesity to a low level should target the following factors. Firstly is the food environment, the personal physical activities people engage on and the social as well as the economic environment.
The second element to be targeted is the individual behavior. This should aim at changing the physical activities as well as the eating habits. Thirdly, the third should be the supportive health services as well as the clinical interventions some of the policies that that influence physical activities. Within the environment include transportation policies, environmental policies, and urban planning and set up policies. Recent research done by Sallis made a summary of the impacts of the food environment as well as the possible solution to the obesity-related complications. Staying in communities that embraced physical tasks as well as having recreational facilities indicated that such communities; people were associated with a high degree of physical engagements from both the youths and tithe old. Good design of schools for example with building designs that incorporated the use of staircases than installing elevators were found to manifest high levels of physical fitness.
The existence of social inequalities due to economic disparities and insecurity was found to be a possible cause of obesity. In this case, the policies that influenced education, employment, financial as well as the social could affect the population health. At the national level, bilateral and multilateral agreements the regime of personal income as well as the mechanisms to do with the potential policy areas at all levels of trade in order to lead to the development of strategies that are population based in order to guarantee obesity prevention.
Conclusion
Obesity has dire consequences to the health of the individual, the society as well as the government. Today, obesity is on the rise and is expected to rise some more in the near future, unless we all decide to do something pertaining to it. Many people are ignorant of the consequences that come up with being obese. Obesity is a choice as one can decide to either control it or not, through regulating one’s lifestyles. There exist many habits and activities that may result in healthy lifestyles. It is good to eat moderately in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise is also important in relation to the adoption of a healthy diet which can meet adequate nutritional needs. If these causes of obesity could be decreased in the United States it is much possible for the US to bring the condition under control. We should correctively change the obesity trend by starting to live a new healthy America.
