Poverty and Obesity

Social factors are significant in controlling health behaviors. Where a person lives and their lifestyle is termed as one of the social effects of obesity. In low-income neighborhoods, people are surrounded by low-quality foods compared to high-income neighborhoods. Lack of access to quality food contributes to obesity. Such areas are flocked with fast-food restaurants which offer food that is at all not healthy. High-calorie food also cost more than healthy foods and thus becomes the best choice for poor individuals due to financial constraints. Lack of space to establish parks is also another reason. This is majorly common in low-income neighborhoods compared to the high-income areas. In parks, people can indulge in a good number of outdoor activity hence keeping one fit. Significant outdoor activities should be incorporated into people’s daily routines to promote healthy lifestyles. Also, another factor contributing to obesity is lack of sufficient space for the establishment of other social amenities like a supermarket where one can easily access healthy foods.

The documentary brings in place a lot of facts. It’s very disturbing how cases of obesity have been increasing over the years. This majorly affecting the people living in poverty. They have very unhealthy eating habits and also their way of life. The nature of the places they live in also has a hand in this. It is, however, very exciting to see how the county governments of the respective counties dealing with high numbers of obesity have recently put in place various policies to tackle this situation. It goes without saying that, poverty is seen as the major cause of obesity. In one way or the other, it contributes to obesity. Most of the social effects of obesity are directly connected to poverty.
