Observation One: Physical/Motor Development
The baby is a 9-month-old boy named Ty. He is the brother of my friend. The observation starts at around one in the afternoon. He has just come from his daytime nap and after having a bottle of milk, his mother has placed him in his play mat with five of his favorite toys. I ask why she gives him so many at once and she tells me that his concentration and interest span is very short, and this causes him to lose interest on a toy and pick another, and the cycle continues until he gets bored. Of the five toys are a worm train made of lighted jointed balls, which he should push and pull with the help of an adult, and a truck with four colored balls that he should load and then push a lighting expulsion button that pushes them out and the cycle continues. There is also a wheel with animal shaped buttons which he presses, and it makes the animal sounds. There is a rolling ball that rolls in a circular motion as it sings, whenever its lighting buttons are pressed. There is also a jingling toy.
Ty is excited to have them all around him where he hits playfully and pushes them, and his mother brings them back. Of all toys, he seems to like the wheel more. His grip is still not strong enough and so he uses his palm to slap the toy into motion. He also knows how to press the buttons whenever the animal sounds and songs stop playing. He likes the jingle toy next, which he is able to pick with his pincer grip. Since it is small enough for his grasp, he shakes it energetically and keeps putting it into his mouth until he is tired. He then tries to hold the balls that are too big for his grasp. His mother has to hand them to him and help him load them on the truck, then push the button for it to expel them out. There are light blue, green, orange and yellow balls, but Ty prefers the orange one the most. Whenever his mother hands him other colors, he pushes himself forward and tries to pick the orange one. So far, all he can do is load the balls, an activity he loves to do. He also pulls the truck towards himself and inspects if there are any balls in it. During play, his mother engages him in talk as she helps him around his toys. He keeps bubbling the dadadada language and at times adds mmm mmmm, while looking at her as if telling her something.
Ty does not pay much attention to the other toys today. After around fifteen minutes of play, he loses interest and tries to reach for the remote. His mother puts him on the couch to watch his favorite video of baby shark, among other videos on a laptop next to him, which he stays alert for about an hour. When his favorite parts come, he coos loudly and holds on to his feet while sucking on his lower lip. When less favorite parts come, he tries press the keyboard as he sees his mother doing, and when it interferes and stops the video, he gives his mother an amused look as if asking for help. He also tries to mimic some parts until his mother picks him for forty minutes for some bonding time. When she coughs, he also gets in a coughing fit, and also mimics many other things. He cannot walk or crawl but is constantly reaching out for objects and throwing them down for someone to pick.
Based on Fogel’s developmental progress, the baby should be crawling and moving around with support from objects, a thing Ty has not begun. Even so, he is able to do other things such as roll, lift light objects with his pincer grip, move his limbs around, concentrate on objects he likes and engage in play (Fogel and Melson, 1987). The baby is a little bit late on his physical development but is doing well on his motor skills development. Ty still has some time to catch up with his physical development progress. Besides his physical development delay, he is a healthy baby who is growing normally.
