Some of the managerial topics that have been discussed over the past few weeks have to do with styles of leadership along with motivation and the set-up-to-fail syndrome as cited by different authors in HBR (2011).  For this week, we are staying with Manzoni and Barsoux as cited in HBR (2011) and their idea concerning those who are part of the in-group or the out-group of a workplace from a managerial perspective.  In addition, as we have completed some work about the set-up-to-fail syndrome, next week we will add reading the article by Walker as cited in HBR (2011) about Saving Your Rookie Manager from Themselves.

This week, there are two options for the assignment, so please pick the one that motivates you and will be of value to your profession or personal develop as an effective manager and/or develop a further understanding of effective management skills around managing others.

For this week's assignment, please state clearly if you are addressing Option One or Option Two from the assigned as noted below.  Please find one article or example from a business case study to support your reasoning for the selection and include this in the summary of the discussion.

Option One: Please discuss how managers can implement ways to discourage in-groups and out-groups.  Give examples of what you have seen work or not work either from your own experiences from what you have observed or learned from the reading and/or videos or provide an article to support your logic for the discussion.

Option Two:  Please discuss how a manager can support or motivate groups or individuals and provide an example(s) of behavior(s) that effective approaches to address the behavior for development and change may lead to positive outcomes.  You may use your own experiences, readings and/or videos or provide an article to support the logic for the discussion,

This should be an in-depth discussion that also takes into consideration other literature that supports the readings.   There are videos that can be used this week, and you may include a researched scholarly article to use in your post.

Also, please post to the discussions on time so all students can contribute to quality discussions.   The first postings should be posted by 1159 pm on Wednesday and the second by 1159 pm on Saturday.  You may add content to your discussion and expand further upon the initial  post during the week and until Saturday pm, however, please do post timely even if you may still have more to say, as timeliness will benefit all concerned.

Thank you.
