An article by Wills et al (2018) aimed to explore perceptions of nurse appearance and projected professionalism. A sample size of 120 students were used as volunteers to participate in the study. The main research question to be answered was “how do college students perceive the professional appearance of nurses?” The study design was quantitative on cross sectional and non-experimental study with their descriptive design. From the results of this study, it was concluded that the participants perceived nurses who took their time to work on their appearance to be professional, least lazy and trustworthy. Nurses that were not careful about their appearance were perceived as lacking confidence and less compassionate.
Another article by Desta et al., (2015) aimed at understanding uniform wearing practices and factors associated with these practices in hospitals in Ethiopia. Five hospitals were used in the research study and 459 nurses participated. It was a qualitative study with data collection done using self-administered questionnaires. Results indicated that 35% of the respondents did not implement nurse uniform because there were no specific uniforms for the nurses as recommended by hospital management. Nursing uniform was also influenced positively by being female, appeal of nursing uniforms to the nurses and studying nursing by choice.
A final study Published by the Journal of research in medical and dental science Aimed to understand the effect of nursing uniform on anxiety in children. 240 children between the age of 6 and 12 years old participated in the study well they were divided into 2 equal groups. The first group consisted of admitted children with a nurse putting on navy blue uniform while the others putting on pink uniforms. Demographic questionnaires were used to collect results after 4 hours and analyzed using SPSS 21. The results of this study concluded that the pink uniform appealed to the children more and resulted into less anxiety as compared to Navy blue uniform of nurses (Pakseresht et al., 2019).
