Nursing Discussion

My specialty role option is that of a Nurse Practitioner. I am tasked with the assessment of patient needs, interpretation and ordering of lab and diagnostic tests, and the formulation and prescription of treatment plans. However, there are various problems that prevent nurse practitioners in the country from carrying out their duties effectively. One of the problems that affect nurse practitioners is the nursing shortage. Haddad, Annamaraju, and Toney-Butler (2020) assert that many healthcare institutions have staffing problems when it comes to nurses. The shortage of nurses results in situations where the current nurse practitioners are overworked, face burnout, have low job satisfaction levels, and high turnover rates. This topic is of interest to me because nurse practitioners play a crucial role in the provision of healthcare services in the country. If their ability to work is curtailed, then the healthcare outcomes in the country will be adverse and will be characterized by low quality of life and high mortality rates.

To gain insight into this topic, I conducted a comprehensive library search for pertinent literature. The library search strategy, which I used entailed using the key phrase ‘nursing shortage’ and searching for peer-reviewed journal articles on the topic. The literature I reviewed asserted that the nursing shortage in the country is a cause for concern (Jarrar et al., 2018). The few nurses available are stretched beyond their capacity and do not provide their patients with the highest possible level of care (Armmer, 2017). Most of them are emotionally and physically drained due to having to work for long hours without rest. In turn, this causes low job satisfaction and burnout. Additionally, the low staffing problem is not conducive to patient safety (Marć et al., 2019). A potential innovation, which I might consider as a solution to the problem identified is to establish a radical educational and recruitment drive to ensure that there is a more conducive environment, which supports the enrollment of new nurses into the current workforce. Such a program should be funded by the federal government and relevant stakeholders in order to greatly minimize the cost of being a nurse practitioner in the country. This will ensure that more people study for nursing and get recruited by healthcare facilities in the country. Also, the program should ensure that nurses are well compensated for their duties and are provided with many opportunities for career advancement in order to enhance their job satisfaction levels.
