Nurse Practitioner Interview

Nurse Practitioner’s Credentials

           The nurse practitioner (NP) I interviewed, M.R. W.R., has specialized in family nursing 

practice. He achieved this after completing a master of science in nursing (M.S.N.) qualification. 

He was certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The N.P.’s credential is 

M.S.N., FNP-BC, indicating his highest academic qualification and area of specialization. The 

N.P.N.P. is pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree, which he aspires to complete 

in a year. He believes the D.N.P. would increase his competencies and marketability in nursing 

practice.

Practice Setting, Job Description, and Responsibilities

           Family Nurse Practitioners (F.N.P.s) work in various healthcare settings, including private 

practice, community health settings, physicians’ offices, and acute and rehabilitative care 

settings. F.N.P.s offer several family-oriented healthcare services, including seniors, adolescents, 

infants, adults, and children. Their responsibilities include creating treatment plans, ordering and 

performing diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, conducting physical assessments, and 

treating illnesses. Also, F.N.P.s maintain patient records and carry out health promotion, disease 

prevention, and rehabilitative programs for patients, families, and communities.

Years in Practice, Number of Patients, and Leadership Roles

           M.R. W.R. has a cumulative 15-year experience in nursing practice. Of these, he spent ten 

years as a registered nurse (RN) and five years as an F.N.P. He sees an average of 20 to 25 

patients daily. The average age of patients is 40 years. The facility sees patients between 0 to 80 

years daily with acute to chronic illnesses. Besides, M.R. W.R. oversees infection prevention and 

control initiatives at the facility. He is tasked with ensuring that other healthcare providers

adhere to the standard infection prevention and control protocols to minimize hospital-acquired 

infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections.

Coding responsibilities, direct reimbursement, own Medicare billing number

According to M.R. W.R., every N.P. must understand their state’s billing and coding 

requirements for accurate and complete documentation. The optimal understanding of these 

requirements is critical for the proper documentation supporting hospital claims. N.P.s must 

document the patient’s history, assessment, or medical decision-making to bill for an established 

patient visit. In addition, NP W.R. has a Medicare billing number and can directly seek 

reimbursement from Medicare for the services offered to patients.

Listing as a primary care provider (P.C.P.) in any managed care organizations or

insurance agencies

           The N.P. is listed as a P.C.P. by a private insurance provider.

Accomplishing chart reviews

           The N.P. has a well-laid-out model with his collaborating physician guiding the chart 

review. In these chart reviews, the N.P. meets with the collaborating physician and reviews a 

random sample of the N.P.’s charts and prescribed medications.

Continuing education responsibilities

           According to him, continuing education is a critical tool for improving his nursing 

competency and maintaining his advanced practice in the nursing license. He usually earns his 

continuing education credits by participating in various pieces of training created by the 

American Nurses Association (ANA).

Specific protocols in the practice setting

           M.R. W.R. informed me that their organization's policy is to conduct a cultural 

assessment of their patients to help individualize nursing care and enhance cultural sensitivity to 

improve patient satisfaction.

Collaborative practice agreement

M.R. W.R. has a written collaborative practice agreement with a physician stipulating how they 

may handle patient referrals, patient reviews, chart reviews, and disagreements during planning 

care to enhance their functioning.

Other information

           The N.P. likes the job satisfaction of being an N.P. due to the increased autonomy that 

enables him to function at his full potential. He belongs to various professional organizations like 

the American Association for Nurse Practitioners, which spearheads advocacy programs to 

improve the N.P. practice.

Impacts of this assignment

           This assignment improved my understanding of the N.P. practice. It enlightened me on 

the various aspects of N.P. functioning, including reimbursements, collaboration, and 

satisfaction. Further, I realized that adherence to standard protocols is significant for ideal NP 

practice.
