Concept Mapping

The purpose of this assignment is to create a concept map that illustrates the linkages and inter-relationships of the selected theory. The map will be demonstrated both in literary and diagram formats. In addition, it will be color coded to assure a clear understanding of the concepts by the reader.

Problem and Purpose Statements

The increase in healthcare costs and advances in technology have necessitated the advancement of skills and knowledge of bedside nurses. The costs of continuous professional development have led to investment of individual nurses versus the collective nursing staff. The purpose of this theory is to show; 1) investment of nurse staffing and support for professional development by healthcare organizations directly related to increased knowledge and skills of all nursing staff will increase the quality of care (organizational goals) and decrease costs related to hospital acquired conditions (HACs) and adverse events (patient outcomes) (Covell, 2008, p. 94, 101).

The Concept Map

In figure 1.1, a concept map demonstrating the two major theoretical concepts of nursing human and structural capital have been color coded in yellow boxes. The elements of these concepts are in light green circles and connected to the boxes with lines to show their linkages. The patient and organizational outcomes are located to the right of the concepts in blue triangles. The elements of the outcomes are connected using red octagons. The assumptions of the theory showing nurse staffing and employer support for professional development are located to the left of the concepts in purple arrows with their elements in orange circles with lines drawn to show their linkages to the concepts.

Summary

The color coding method was used based on the rules of concept map making by Veo (Veo, 2010, p. 21). The linear design of the map was developed using the recommendations of Grove, Burns, and Grady (Grove, Burns, & Gray, 2013, p. 132-133). This concept maps shows the direct relation of nurse staffing and employer support for professional development to be directly related to nursing human capital leading to increased organizational outcomes. In addition, it shows how nursing human and structural capital is directly related to patient outcomes.
