The Title of Your Paper Goes Here Again
Please use this template to plan and design your professional development plan, based on your personal history, goals, and career plans. Creating this plan will require you to research and reflect upon what is important to you. Begin with a brief introduction to your plan here. The introduction provides you with an opportunity to capture your reader’s attention by indicating what the paper will be about and how you will be describing a topic or arguing a point.
Begin your introduction with an attention grabber (summary information, anecdote, startling information). If the attention grabber is only a sentence or two, add a few more sentences that will lead the reader from your opening to your thesis statement. Usually a statement at the end of your introductory paragraph delineates your thesis, such as: “This paper will show/is about……… “
In your paper include multiple examples from your assigned readings, the ANA Essentials of Nursing Package (Contains Scope and Standards of Practice, Guide to Nursing’s Social Policy Statement, and the Guide to the Code of Ethics for Nurses), and what you hope to learn in the RN-BSN program that will propel your nursing career and overall career goals and plans. Remove ONLY the RED instructions as you create your plan!
Educational and Personal Background
· How did you come to the place you are now in your nursing career? [Directions--Leave the above sentence—do not remove it. Then write your response to this question. Do the same for everything else in the paper. Remember to really think about how and why you came to nursing. How did your nursing career path get you here? Please utilize complete sentences].
· Describe where the motivation comes for your journey in your professional nursing career: [Directions--Leave this sentence—do not remove it. Then write your response to this question. Do the same for everything else in the paper. Remember to really think about your nursing career path and what motivates you to be here and keeps you going toward professional growth and life-long learning. Utilize complete sentences.
Professional History
Leave the bullet categories below and discuss any past professional involvement for each and elaborate on why they are important for your current and future nursing career. If you have no involvement in any of the areas, state this but then elaborate on why it would be important to your nursing career and nursing as a profession. Complete all bullet points (categories). Do not delete any! You must address each one in complete sentences. Remove ONLY the RED instructions (including this paragraph) as you create your PDP!
*As you write about your history in these areas, think about some goals you may have in relationship to them. You will address those next. An example from professional organizations might be attending a local or regional state nurses’ association meeting to gain a better understanding of how you can get involved. Or for Politics/Advocacy, maybe you want to become a member of the Political Action Committee or Advocacy Group one day. Don’t just think about it as you feel now because that could change. What could you do in this area? Back up the importance with some literature (paraphrased, cited and referenced).
· Professional Organizations (past and present): See above instructions and complete
· Committees (past and present): See above instructions and complete

· Leadership positions (committees, preceptoring, mentoring, etc.): See above instructions and complete
· Community Service/Volunteerism (past and recent): See above instructions and complete
· Politics/Advocacy involvement (registered voter? Community advocate? Patient advocacy?): See above instructions and complete
· Research involvement (data collection, research committee?): See above instructions and complete
· Education (Associate Degree? LPN? Other?): See above instructions and complete
Goals
Provide a brief introduction to your goals. How might they assist you in reaching your overall career goals? Goals should be written as S.M.A.R.T ( S pecific, M easurable, A ttainable, R ealistic, and T imely) goals. You will choose one (1) short term goal (to be completed within one year from now) and two (2) long-term goals (completed more than a year from now) based on the categories you addressed above (Professional Organizations, Committees, Certifications, Leadership positions, Community Service/Volunteerism, Politics/Advocacy involvement, Research involvement, Education). Include specific dates to accomplish each goal. These dates may change as you continue working toward your goals, but it is important to designate a clear timeframe. For each goal you will include why it is important to you and a brief action plan to accomplish them. Remove ONLY the RED instructions as you create your plan!
Short Term Goal (STG -within a year):
Choose one short term professional goals from the categories you addressed under your professional history . Write them out as S.M.A.R.T. Goals (example: I will apply for a charge nurse position on my unit by [Month, Year] or I will join the Florida Nurses Association by …). Notice how the goal is very Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Now, explain why this is important to you. Include a brief action plan as to how you will achieve this goal. Be sure to include the ways in which you will specifically take action. Back up the importance with some literature (paraphrased, cited and referenced). Remove ONLY the RED instructions as you create your plan!
· Short-term goal - Put category here: S.M.A.R.T. Goal and explanation of importance
· STG #1 Action Plan: What steps will you need to take to achieve this goal?
Long Term Goals (LTG -more than a year)
Choose two long term professional goals from the categories you addressed under your professional history . Example: I will successfully complete the RN to BSN program with a GPA of 3.5 or higher by [date] or I will apply to graduate school by [date]. It states specifically what you will do, in a timeframe, and you can measure it by your Grade Point Average (GPA), graduation, and graduate school application. Now explain why this is important to you. Maybe you need a BSN for your current position or one you want to achieve, and a certain GPA to enter a graduate program or it is a personal standard. Back up the importance with some literature (paraphrased, cited and referenced) like why having a BSN will assist your career or why it’s important for nurses to advance to leadership positions. Include a brief action plan as to how you will achieve this goal. Be sure to include the ways in which you will specifically take action. Consider your expected grad date maybe within the year, so it would need to be listed then as a short term goal (just be realistic). You can add more goals if this is desired. You are not limited to two. Remove ONLY the RED instructions as you create your plan!
· Long-term goal #1 - Put category here: S.M.A.R.T. Goal and explanation of importance
· LTG #1 Action Plan: What steps will you need to take to achieve this goal?
· Long-term goal #2 – Put category here: S.M.A.R.T. Goal and explanation of importance
· LTG #2 Action Plan: What steps will you need to take to achieve this goal?
Strengths and areas where improvement is sought
Include a brief summary of your strengths and areas where improvement is sought (examples: basic nursing skills, technology skills, communication/collaboration skills, leadership skills, attitude, experience, etc.). Leave the titles in place. This is a good place for a scholarly nursing reference or source of support.
Nursing Strengths (List): Be specific. How might your strengths assist in your career goals?
Areas for improvement (List): Be specific. How might your areas for improvement deter your career goals? What can you do to strengthen them?
Potential Barriers and Strategies to Goal Achievement
Include here a brief summary of all possible obstacles standing in the way of your career goals AND strategies to overcome them. This is also a good place for a reference.
Conclusion
A paper’s conclusion should return to the main ideas of your paper and summarize them. Simply review the main points (being careful not to restate them exactly). You are essentially paraphrasing your entire plan to wrap it all up. Per the rubric, the conclusion should be substantive. At the end, make a final point or idea for you and the reader to think about.
References
References go on a new page and is formatted as the examples demonstrated below. Utilize the “page break” function.
References require hanging indentations which means the first line of each reference is at the left margin and the subsequent lines in each reference is indented 0.5 inches.
Format your reference page by clicking on the little arrow in the Paragraph group found on the Home tab. In the ‘Paragraph dialog box’ under Special: use the dropdown and click on Hanging and it will automatically format the indentation by 0.5 inches.
Then, go down to Line spacing: and choose ‘Double’ and at the bottom click OK. Be sure to not double/double-space between each reference. The references should be uniformly double spaced.
It is your responsibility to italicize, capitalize, parenthesize, and punctuate according to APA rules. Please refer to your APA 7th edition Manual and the APA Tutorial/Quick Guide.
After you have entered all the sources you have cited in your document, alphabetize the list of sources clicking the “Sort” button (the AZ on the top line of the “Paragraph” portion on your ribbon). You will sort Paragraphs by Text in Ascending order.
Remember to include at least one nursing, scholarly journal article and reference from one of the ANA Essential texts (Scope and Standards, Code of Ethics, or Social Policy). Additional sources should be professional nursing sources such as the course text or another journal article.
Please see pages 58 and 66 of the APA Manual (7th ed.). This is what your reference page should look like. Contact your faculty instructor if you have any questions about this Professional Development Plan.
Your references need to be in alphabetical order. Please be sure to check your spelling!
Remove all red instructions. You can convert the two examples below to black font color and use them IF you paraphrased and cited information from them in your philosophy (a good idea!).
