NUR3805 Professional Development Plan (PDP) Guideline/Rubric

Course Objectives, Program Outcomes, and AACN Essentials:

Title: Professional Development Plan

Audience: Personal Reflection

Point of view: First/Third Person

Format: APA and Level 1 Headings

Template: Provided and required

Length: 2-3 double-spaced pages (minimum) not including title or reference page

References: Three (3 minimum) One (1) being a current, scholarly nursing journal article and one (1) from the ANA

Essential texts (Scope and Standards, Code of Ethics, or Social Policy). The third can be another journal article, the

text or any other professional source of your choice. Grading Rubric: Please see the Assignment Rubric for further details related to this assessment and grading criteria.

Assignment Guidelines: Your assignment is to create a Professional Development Plan (PDP) pertaining to your

nursing career.

A Professional Development Plan (PDP) is an essential component of your career growth and goals. With constant

change and the evolution of the nursing profession, keeping your skills and knowledge current will give you an

advantage in achieving your career goals. As with your other life goals, it is recommended that you develop a

personalized action plan designed to help you achieve your goals. A plan with explicit goals will provide structure

for your future learning. Continuing education, both formal and informal, is a critical part of continuing to be

competent to practice. Continuing education or life-long learning, is the key to growth and empowerment.

Continuing competence is the demonstration of competence in current professional practice incorporating life-long

learning. Each Keiser nursing student is required to design an individualized Professional Development Plan, which

is the planning and implementation of individualized goals and professional career plans.

A template is provided and must be used. Do not delete any portion of the template and address each section completely.

The purpose of the template is to give your PDP structure and to make sure you address each component necessary for a

comprehensive plan. Additional instructions and examples are provided on the template. You will be using SMART goals

(Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely).

You should have all the following components in your completed plan:

1. An introduction to your plan. Discuss personal history, what you hope to accomplish in the program, overall goals and

career plans.

2. Educational and Personal Background. Present how you arrived at where you are today in nursing and where your

motivation comes from to continue professional growth and life-long learning in nursing.

3. Professional History addressing each category. Present your past history and any current work in the categories (bullet

points) provided. Consider and present what you could do in these areas and why it is important in nursing as you prepare to

write goals.

4. S.M.A.R.T. goals Carefully thought out short-term (1) and long-term (2) goals that are Specific, Measurable,

Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. You must include specific dates by which you intend to accomplish each goal. These dates

may change as you continue working towards your goals, but it is important to have a clear time frame in mind. You will

include an explanation of why each goal is important to you and a brief action plan to guide completion of your goal.

5. Strengths & areas where improvement is sought. Analysis of strengths and areas for improvement is sought.

6. Barriers and Strategies to Goal Achievement. Discuss possible obstacles standing in the way of your goals and strategies

to overcome. This requires deep self-reflection!

8. Conclusion. Present a wrap-up of your entire plan.

9. References. Include a reference page at the end and proper APA citations within your plan for paraphrased content from

those sources. APA format information can be found under the ASSIGNMENTS tab on the course menu, Professional

Scholarly Writing, within your APA 7th edition manual, and under the Student Resources, Writing and Library tab within the

course.

To submit your Professional Development Plan, please submit it to the appropriate submission area located under week three.

Plans submitted to any other location will not be accepted. Write your plan in the required Word document template provided.

Save it in a location and with a name that you will remember. To upload your attachment, click on the browse button, and

browse your computer for the Word document containing your plan. Make sure that you save a copy of the plan that you

submit. You may be asked to review your plan and discuss in other courses.

Your paper will automatically be submitted through SafeAssign, a plagiarism software program. Please review the SafeAssign

information on the course menu under the ASSIGNMENTS tab. You can also find information under the Student Resources

Tab, Writing and Library link within the course.

Additional sources can be from the ANA Essential texts, additional nursing scholarly articles, or course text. Professional websites can be

included, but must be in proper APA format. The use of web sites such as Wikipedia or a non-discipline supportive website are not allowed.
