Williamsburg History

  • Williamsburg was founded as the Capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699
  • Jamestown was the first permanent English speaking settlement in the New World founded in 1607
  • Williamsburg celebrated its 300th Anniversary in 1999
  • College of William & Mary was founded in 1693
  • First hospital established for the care and treatment of mental illness was founded in Williamsburg in 1773
  • George Washington assembled the Continental Army in Williamsburg in 1781 for the siege of nearby Yorktown and the winning of American independence. (City of Williamsburg Virginia Colonial capital, n.d.)

Williamsburg has some very rich and interesting history. Colonial Williamsburg is a very big and popular attraction for the tourists that come to visit this community. There is always a field trip at least once a year with one of the public schools that come here to learn about the culture and Colonial history.

Emergency preparedness is so important for a community so the citizens will know what to do in an emergency being prepared and taking the proper steps to ensure everyones safety

  • Disasters often strike quickly and without warning.  A disaster can force you to evacuate your home or office, separate you from your family and affect your access to every day necessities like food, water and electricity.

  • Divide city into 8 sections with apporx. 7-8 neighborhoods in each section
  • Work with Neighborhood and existing groups such as neighborhood watch to organize the neighborhood in the event of a man made or natural disaster
  • Identify material resources and supplies
  • Identify elderly, disabled, or at risk individuals who will require assistance
  • Develop a communication system

  • Fire and rescue teams assisting in the evacuation of homes
  • Make sure local hospital and all essential personnel are on call and open for medical assistance
  • The Quarter path Recreation Center at 202 Quarter path Road is the City's emergency shelter. When needed, the shelter is available for City residents and staff.

Mitigation is commonly defined as sustained actions taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards and their effects. Hazard mitigation focuses attention and resources on community policies and actions that will produce successive benefits over time. A mitigation plan states the aspirations and specific courses of action that a community intends to follow to reduce vulnerability and exposure to future hazard events. These plans are formulated through a systematic process centered on the. (Peninsula Hazard Mitigation Plan Update, 2011)

Rationale for ranking this as the 1st Priority Community Nursing Diagnosis

  • There is a very high population of diabetics in my community, and they come into the hospital with infections that ultimately can make the diabetes worse and increase the blood sugars
  • Very important to increase awareness on this illness because it can affect the entire body from balance, vision, blood pressure and even sensations.

By 2020 decrease the percentage of obese adults and young children by 10%

By 2020 increase the percentage of adult and child activity, they will engage in physical activity at least 30 minutes per day

Rationale for ranking this as the 2nd Priority Community Nursing Diagnosis

  • This is a growing problem that can lead to a lot of other issues like diabetes, hypertension, and immobility. If the problem can be prevented then it can eliminate a lot of other health problems.
  • Education for this problem can be fairly easy to do and to encourage the patient to monitor intake and diet.

Fitness programs and weigh the patients and then wait approx. 6 months and weigh again to see if there was a decrease in the weights

  • This course has helped me learn more about my community
  • Make me want to do more to help my community to become more aware, healthy, and safe
  • Understand the different subsystems and how they work and their importance in my community
  • Have a better understanding of what the community nurse’s role is and how they affect the community

This project has helped me appreciate my community more because I have learned that this community is very large and continues to grow and flourish with people
