In addressing each criterion on the CASP checklist, make sure that you:

1. Provide a decision (yes/can’t tell/no)

2. Provide evidence for your decision. The ‘hints’ for each question provide useful guidance to help you structure your response.

 

Your completed assignment should contain the following components:

Your critical appraisal Use the questions in the CASP checklist as headings.

A short introduction Keep this brief – around 100 words should be adequate.

A discussion Summarise the strengths and weaknesses of the paper and its value for policy, practice and theory development.  Limit this to about 300 words.

A conclusion Again, keep this brief (about 100 words). 

A reference list Link your critical appraisal to relevant literature in the field. You may use whatever combination of theoretical, methodological and empirical literature best support the arguments you make in your appraisal.  Your empirical literature should be related explicitly to the content of the paper you are appraising.  We expect at least 6 references for this assignment.
