INTRODUCTION TO NEW TESTAMENT STUDIES

There will be five sections in the final exam.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Read instructions and answer questions carefully!

2. Open book: Bibles, Textbook and Notes allowed. ( PART 1: GOSPELS QUESTIONS (20 POINTS) Choose and indicate the Gospel most closely associated with the following statements: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. ) ( PART 2: PAUL’S LETTER QUESTIONS (10 POINTS) Choose and indicate the Pauline letter most closely associated with the following statements: Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, or Philemon. ) ( PART 3: GENERAL LETTERS AND REVELATION QUESTIONS (10 POINTS) Choose and indicate the General letter or Revelation most closely associated with the following statements: Hebrew, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Jude, or Revelation. )

PART 4: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (40 POINTS)

Each question is worth 5 points so write at least 5 distinct and separate points (about 2 sentences for each point). You can write in point form.

1. Discuss the importance and significance of history, literary and theology for reading and understanding the New Testament.

2. Discuss the various types and significance of biblical criticism and the role of the author, text and reader in formulating meaning.

3. Discuss the background history and geography of Israel before and during the time of Jesus.

4. Discuss the synoptic problem and early Christianity.

5. Discuss the story and teachings of Jesus and historical Jesus’ debate.

6. Discuss the narrative outline, literary features, historical background, and major theological themes in the Gospel of Matthew.

7. Discuss the narrative outline, literary features, historical background, and major theological themes in the Gospel of Mark.

8. Discuss the narrative outline, literary features, historical background, and major theological themes in the Gospel of Luke.

9. Discuss the narrative outline, literary features, historical background, and major theological themes in the Gospel of John, as well as its differences between the Synoptic Gospels.

10. Discuss the narrative outline, literary features, historical background, and major theological themes in the book of Acts, as well as its similarities and continuity with the Gospel of Luke.

11. Discuss aspects and significance of Paul the Apostle.

12. Discuss all the issues or problems of the Corinthian church found in 1 Corinthians and Paul’s individual solutions to each one of them.

13. Discuss the addressees, historical situation, literary structure, and major themes of Hebrews.

14. Discuss the authorship, the literary characteristics and themes, in James as well as its affinity to the wisdom tradition.

( 15. Discuss the genre(s), literary structure, and purpose of Revelation as well as the many ways in which it can be interpreted. )

( PART 5: ESSAY QUESTION (50 POINTS) Answer ALL the questions. Write clearly and concisely. List 10 significant points for each question (about 2 sentences for each point). You can write in point form. Discuss the different methods and aspects of reading, interpreting, and understanding the New Testament. Discuss in detail why the Gospels are important? What do they tell us and not tell us about Jesus? Differentiate between each Gospel’s portrayal of Jesus. Discuss the significance of letters in the New Testament. What are their individual characteristics and themes? Be specific. What is the overarching message of the New Testament? How is the New Testament relevant for today and modern society? List 10 significant concepts from other students’ presentations. )
