Research Paper
Assignment: Using reference books, the Internet, and/or other library resources, research and prepare a research paper on a building model code or standard. Your paper must include a minimum of:
A brief explanation of the purpose of the code
The history or evolution of the code
The most recent code changes and their implications
What versions of the code are being applied by local authorities
Code List pick one, ( or find one you are interested in)have instructor initial for approval
International Plumbing Code
International Mechanical Code
Any National Fire Protection Code (incl. the NEC)
Delaware Energy Code
Any ASHRAE Standard

Paper Format:
A) Written work: Written in APA format with cover page and citation page. Body of written work must be 2-4 page minimum (not including cover page and citation/reference page). The written portion of your research paper must be: 1. Typed, double spaced, with 1 inch margins (side page, top & bottom page). Use an Arial 11 point font or a Times New Roman 12 point font.
2. Hand written work will not be accepted.
3. All work must be of your own research, findings and own words. Include a legend block for clarification if necessary.
3. Your paper should have as a minimum the following sections with a heading identifying each section:
a. Cover Page
b. Table of Contents
c. Introduction or Abstract
d. Body (to include all research findings)
e. Conclusion or Summary
f. Citations / References
4. Graphs and Charts: Should be drawn using MS Word, Excel or other suitable computer software. Graphs should incorporate a legend block(s).
5. Drawings/schematics: All diagrams must be neatly drawn, legible, and are to include a legend block listing all used symbols. Note: Extra credit will be given for drawings done using CADD program software. e.g.: AutoCAD, Google Sketch Up, etc.
6. Citations: All resources used must be properly cited and acknowledged.
7. Presentation: Completed research paper and associated drawings should be enclosed in a binder or protective jacket.
Date Due: Must be turned in for grading by the beginning of class on ________ No research papers will be accepted after the turn in date. Research papers may be turned in prior to this date if you have them completed early.
Grading: This research paper is worth 10 % of your total grade and will be scored / graded as per the attached rubric.
Writing Center: All students should visit the Writing Center, room 231, a minimum of one time. Have the Writing Center notify the instructor of your visit.
Weekly Check-In: Contact your instructor weekly to review your progress
Rough Draft: A rough draft of your research paper is due mid-term to be reviewed by the instructor.
Paper Turn In: The paper shall be turned in for grading no later than the scheduled due date. You may turn in the paper earlier if completed. In addition to turning in a paper copy of your research paper you must also upload an electronic copy of the research paper onto Black Board
