Let’s Look at Week 2: Tips for Success

Quantitative Research

Rich paradigm with many research designs

The researcher selects the research design based on the research question

Descriptive; quasi-experimental; experimental;

Research methods are appropriate to the intention of quantitative research

Prediction

Sampling plan; sample size; data collection; data analysis; rigor

Quantitative research evidence

Lends support to the articulation of a practice problem

8 national practice problems

heart disease; COPD; diabetes; obesity; cancer; mental illness; addiction (alcohol; opioid); patient safety (immunizations; falls; skin; errors; infection)

Let’s Look at Week 2: Tips for Success

A few reminders as you work on the Week 2 discussion. Each reminder relates to the importance and role of published quantitative research in the design of a practice change project.

     - You will not design or create the intervention you use in your future practice change project.

     - The research-proven intervention /evidence-based intervention you use in your future practice change project is located in a published quantitative research study.

     - The research-proven intervention/evidence-based intervention you use in your future practice change project is not standard of care in your practice setting.

    -  The research-proven intervention/evidence-based intervention you use in your future practice change project is standard of care in practice settings across the U.S. and these settings each report better practice outcomes than what is in your practice setting.

Here is one of many quantitative research studies conducted on one of our national practice problems - depression. There are numerous research-proven interventions/evidence-based interventions in published research that are not being used in your daily practice.

Perhaps the intervention tested in the attached study is one of those not being used with individuals that present with depression.

Translating this research proven intervention - 'brief web-based intervention' - to your setting to learn if it impacts outcomes in your setting, may lead to translating this intervention to additional individuals beyond your practice change project.

What Went Well – Week 2 Prepare for Week 3

Reflect – Week 7 Assessment

The purpose of this activity is to deepen learning through reflective inquiry. It will allow for expansion in self-awareness, identification of knowledge gaps, and assessment of learning goals.

DUE DATE: Sunday 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 7. The Late Assignment Policy applies to this assignment.

A discrete rubric is available to the student that aligns with each expectation of the assessment.

Prepare for Week 3

Continue to explore research literature that supports your selected practice problem

Build a personal library of research evidence

Week 6 Assessment

Continue to network with stakeholders

Continue to observe your practice problem as you move through your day

Let’s Look at Week 3: Tips for Success

Last week, you explored quantitative inquiry and data.

This week, we'll take that knowledge a step further—you'll have the opportunity to investigate summaries of multiple research studies, including systematic reviews.

In the hierarchy of evidence quality, systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials are considered the gold standard of evidence.

During this week's leg of the journey, you'll learn how to appraise systematic reviews and other summaries of multiple studies using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Research Evidence Appraisal Tool.

Using this industry standard – JH Tools - provides a systematic process of appraisal and assists you in a critical review and appraisal of high-quality evidence.

Besides systematic reviews, we'll examine other summaries of multiple studies, including an integrative review, meta-analysis, and meta-synthesis.
