Nursing care involves several components of the nursing process including assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation (Sengstack, 2012). Nursing informatics specialists include these four elements into projects that benefit clinicians and patients. It takes a team of people to design healthcare informatics systems, from vendors who focus on infrastructure to advanced practice nurses (APNs) who specialize in informatics to the end user being the clinical nurse (Sengstack, 2012).  APNs that specialize in informatics and conduct project management can function as an important connection between the informatics team and the medical staff or nurses. These APNs have an expansive knowledge of informatics as well as the nursing process. They will be able to bridge communications between their departments and the clinical settings. I believe that APNs role with advanced nursing informatics knowledge has increased in recent years in hospital settings. In this information age, it is essential to acquire nursing informatics knowledge and implement for improved patient healthcare outcomes.

Project management is one of the major concepts of nursing informatics. However, it is new for many nurses. Implementation of the project management concepts is essential in every practice. Project management concepts do affect my practice although I do not physically participate in it on a daily basis. I am, however, an end user so therefore if a nursing informatics specialist needed information for their project they could include my input. APNs with project management experience and training are heavily involved in our practice. They help form a bridge between the information technology staff and other healthcare staff to resolve issues related to the nursing information technology. This help is essential especially in a hospital setting where there is a large number of nursing staff working to help patients.  The APNs with project management experience are readily available to help the nursing staff. They also work with the information technology staff to resolve issues in a timely manner.

Good afternoon Maritza, your discussion of project management is excellent. Project management requires lot of skill and it comes with experience of handling difficult situations. Project management is one of the major concepts of nursing informatics. However, it is new for many nurses. Implementation of the project management concepts is essential in every practice. Project management concepts do affect the nursing practice in many ways. The electronic patient record for example, is paramount in gathering information for improvement of patient outcome and quality of care. Patient documentation as we know it, is a vital tool in communicating with various teams the patient’s condition and coordinating patient care according to their needs. A well-designed information system can facilitate easier and faster information to modify patient care plans, facilitate communication between clinicians, and direct patient care processes.

Good evening Professor, I can see the need for constant project management in the healthcare field, just on my floor alone. I believe there is a greater need to integrate the application of project management concepts into practice based on the direction that healthcare, medicine and information technology is heading in and with the gradual development of Nursing Informatics (NI) to a more complex form. Sipes, 2016, implies that project management skills will play a key role in the collaborative transformation of the health care delivery system through the efforts of engaged health care professionals, and consumers via a multitude of projects over time.
