My topic is the use of chlorhexidine products for bathing vs. not bathing prior to surgical procedures to prevent surgical site infections in a 30 day time period.
· What tangible and intangible resources will be needed to implement your project?
The tangible resources needed are the physical items needed such as the products and people. The intangible is the skill level of the people being taught, the implementation of the education, the non- physical resources needed.
· What improved outcomes do you anticipate will occur that could indicate the project produced a successful return on investment (ROI) of these resources?
The improved outcomes I expect or hope to occur to indicate the project produced a positive and successful return of investment would be the reduction or elimination of surgical site infections of the patients studied in a 30 day time period. A surgical site infection is very costly to an institution and the money spent on the research of a product that could reduce or eliminate could make or break a facility. The quality of care, patient safety, compliance with regulatory requirements are all projections of a successful return of investments and affect reimbursement revenue a facility receives. No one wants to show evidence of a Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI), "because HAIs are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality and increased healthcare costs in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) identified the reduction of HAIs as an Agency Priority Goal for the Department" and tracked by the Joint Commision for safety standards (Woten, 2018, p. 2).
· How will you communicate your plan for change with key decision makers so that they will support the allocation of the resources you are seeking?
I will communicate my plan for change with the key decision makers, being the directors of the units as well as the chief financial officer and departments. There are monthly meetings held for those who develop an evidence-based research plan to present the evidence and a trial is started to evaluate a product once approved by this committee. All members of the committee must be in agreement for it to advance to the trial. I would speak directly to my manager about pleading my case on the use of chg products to reduce ssi rates. If the trial is granted, I will then speak to my unit at our monthly meeting and educate them on the process of the chg bathing process. This would involve a huddle one on one using an SBAR technique and have each employee sign off as being properly educated with a return demonstration. "Using standardized tools, such as situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR), can provide standard language" (Chamberlain University, 2018).
