Ethical Debate Questions

• What evidence based research have you found to support that your position is in the best interest of the patient?

• To what extent should either the Healthcare staff or Parents be held accountable for the outcome of the child?

Ethical Principles Pro Side • Autonomy: Person must be able to have cognitive

abilities to make autonomous choices (Bester et al., 2017).

• Beneficence: Offer options that provide benefit and limit harms to a great extent (Bester et al., 2017).

• Non-maleficence: • Justice: Equal and fair distribution of resources to all

citizens (Conti et al., 2018).

• Fidelity: • Veracity: Doctors who do not apply ethical

consultation tend to believe they should resolve the ethical issue, leading to impulsive decision making that could impact patients’ wishes if provider is not well informed (Iijima, 2020).

Con Side • Autonomy: • Beneficence: • Non-maleficence: Violating the patient’s wishes

and autonomy defy doing no harm if patient is competent to make this decision (Scharman et al., 2017).

• Justice: Re-allocating resources to patients who comply with treatment rather than those refusing treatment (Conti et al., 2018).

• Fidelity: • Veracity: Being transparent and accepting patient and

family wishes can lead to stronger patient-provider relationship, withholding information has created lawsuits (Iijima, 2020).
