Notes from my Chair

There should be no instances of the use of Passive Voice

No Anthropomorphism (attributing a human action to a non-human object or thing)

No Pronouns—everything should be specific

Everything should be written in past tense

There will be a new Dissertation Template coming out within the next two weeks. Everything should be put in the new template.

When writing turn “Track Changes” off

Send a clean paper every single time with all corrections corrected as directed by the chair who read the paper

If track changes is on, it will be in gray

When track changes is off, it will be white

Turn in dissertation document in its entirety every single time including front pages and references

Remember 4 contructs:

Attribution—who said it

Objectivity—don’t give us feelings—must be the facts and only the facts

Specificity—don’t use pronouns—don’t use words such as all, some, many, and few

Consistency—be consistent in all you do

Include correct references each and every time you submit something to your chair

References must be correct

Chapter 1 Introduction—This needs to be 3 to 5 paragraphs that sets up your study and tells the reader what your paper is about, it provides context and sets the stage for the entire study

Statement of the Problem—1st section of Ch. 1—this is a detailed roadmap of what you plan to study, it’s a funnel shaped area where you talk about a big problem and narrows down to a local problem. The last statement in this section should read “The purpose of the study is………..

This should include the desired outcome and how the variable affects the outcome

You must justify your variables—can’t just say for example because it’s the law

Typically there should be from 1 to 3 research questions—they are not to be yes or no questions. They tell what the research plans to investigate and how it will be measured.

Example—According to the Maslach Burnout Inventory results, what is the relationship between middle school teachers burnout and perceived principal support in rural schools in a southeastern state?

Example—Based on the results of the XXX text, what are the effects of the intervention programs in elementary schools on the rate of childhood obesity among third thru sixth grade students in one Alabama school district?

Theortical Framework—The predominant theory that the candidate uses to support and inform the research and provide the basis and rationale for the research questions

Examples are:

Efficacy—Bandura

Social Identity—Burke or Stryker

Arena Model—Mazzonl

Activity Theory—Engestrom

Systems Theory—Senge

Role Preformances—Goffman

Trust—Byrk or Hoy

Transformative Learning—Mexirow

Situated Learning—Lave and Wenger

The theortical framework is the structure………as described by Eisenhart (1991)

Every section of the paper must relate to everything else and everything must relate to the research questions

Significance of the Project is the WHY This is the rationale and the importance of studying the problem—why did you do this study? It should address how the study will add to or enhance the research in the field

Definition of Terns should be changed to Description of the Terms----should be a paragraph on each to provide a thorough explanation of the term; however, it should not begin the Literature Review

Describe all terms that those outside the field of study may not understand; relatively new terms; ambiguous terms that need precision; and general terms that you will use in a specific way

In the description of terms, it is always good to use citations

BIG CHANGE

Assumptions of the Study will no longer be in Chapter I---will be moved to Chapter III

Chapter II

Includes relevant empirical research

Use Level 2 Headings for each topic

This should have lots of citations and resources and should be between 30 and 40 pages

Chapter II should include sufficient details so the reader can ascertain how the researcher obtained the findings and conclusions such as population and sample, instrumentation and analytical tools, and effect size and level of significance of the findings

Only use a direct quote when you can’t say it better yourself and limit direct quotes—my chair prefers very few if any

Chapter III

Exact step by step process of study

Must be step by step

Specific order

There should be a brief introductory paragraph and kick right into step by step process that will be used or was used

We should note the research design—quantitative, qualitative, or mixed and WHY

The Research Design guides the appropriate selectin of the sample, the data collection and the tools used

Population of the Study

Describe the population and sample by providing information about the person or group utilizwd in the study

Must identify HOW you determined the population and sample—specific procedures

Characteristics of the individuals or groups

Tables may be necessary for demographic information

MUST PROVIDE JUSTIFICATION OF WHY EACH WOULD BE APPROPRIATE

Data Collection

Step by step procedures used to collect and organize data

Include instrumentation such as name of survey if one is used, permission gained, modifications—be specific

Answer the following: HOW, WHO, WHAT. WHEN, WHERE and WHY to all those previously mentioned

Analytical Method

Describe the statistical methods or qualitative procedures

How did these procedures produce reliable and valid findings

Describe analyzation of the data and how you examined the data either quan or qual

Identify the statistical package that was used

Reliability and Validity

Reliability refers to accuracy, dependability, and credibility

Validity is whether one can draw meaningful and useful inferences

Use triangulation

Limitations and Delimitations

First within the paper tell exactly what limitations and delimitations are just as they are here

Limitations are potential weaknesses in your study that are out of your control (Simon, 2011)

Delimitations are those characteristics that limit the scope and define the boundaries of the study (Simon, 2011)

Move Assumptions and Biases of the Study here

For a quantitative study it should be Assumptions of the Study

There should be statements concerning factors that have a reasonable chance to influence or impact findings but for which the candidate cannot obtain solid data,
