Organizations in the present day are grappling with the challenges of managing employees from different cultural settings as regards communication and communication challenges across cultures. Multicultural leadership calls for a deeper and more comprehensive appreciation of cross-cultural differences in norms, beliefs, and communication styles. According to Shepherd et al. (2019), cultural sensitivity entails being aware, respectful, and, inclusion and being mindful of how people from other backgrounds do things
Adaptability and flexibility is vital for multicultural leaders to understand that may work in one culture may not be effective in the other culture. Modifications are necessary to accommodate cultural differences while creating synergies within the team. Effective communication helps avoid misunderstandings between teams. Cultural factors impact differences in how subordinates perceive critical feedback or respond to praise. One of them is communication style. The variations in communication style across cultures and the use of different styles will impact subordinates ‘response to and receipt of feedback and praise. A good example is the United States, where managers provide direct criticism to employees so that they can improve. This is unlike cultures in Asian countries where they seek indirect feedback. It is possible that in cultures like the United States, some of the subordinates may take the criticism as if it were a confrontation. The result is a poor perception of the seniors by the subordinates. Another is hierarchy and power distance. Dai et al. (2022) believe that power distance has the potential to lead to ineffective communication, especially in perception of inequality and attitude to authority. In particular, cultures with higher power distance tend to emphasize respecting authority. As such, those from low power distance countries may not agree with this.

Cultural norms have a significant effect on creative ideas. They can be both a challenge and also an opportunity for creative ideas. Conservative cultures present individuals with challenges in overcoming traditional thinking.it becomes difficult to initiate creative ideas for such cultures. Shao et al (2019) assert that even though creativity is deeply ingrained within cultures, different cultures have different levels of appreciation of the culture of creativity. For instance, there is difference in the individualistic and collaborative approach to creativity between the western and the eastern countries. There are areas where hierarchical protocols have to be followed in bringing out an innovative idea, while other cultures are just open ended. Collaborative cultures have brainstorming sessions and innovation workshops to explore creative ideas. The recognition and celebration of the diversity of cultures is essential in the spurring of creative ideas.

US negotiations emphasize direct communication unlike Japanese culture. The former prioritizes individual interests and is more assertive. The US conflict resolution is direct and focuses on tangible results. However, in the Japanese culture, there are a lot of consensuses building and indirect conflict resolution methods The Japanese seek to maintain relationships and preserve the existing social cohesion which are the unique values.

Different approaches can help to overcome the existing barriers to communication with people from diverse cultures. Susann (2023) asserts that training on overcoming cultural sensitivity allows for individuals to understand how they can better communicate with other cultures in a way that is more understandable for them. Active listening and empathy when dealing with other cultures is also key. Further, utilization of cultural intelligence helps to be adaptable to different cultural contexts other than that of one. Through the development of cross-cultural intelligence helps combat communication challenges across cultures.
