there is some more reason why Matt killed Strout beside revenge.

One the important motive of Matt kill Strout is the grief of his family. In the beginning of the story, during Frank’s funeral, Dubus states, “Matt’s older son, Steve, turned to him as the family left the grave and walked between their friends, and said: ‘I should kill him.’” Steve expressed his angry and enmity toward to the murder of his brother Frank.

Dubus states, “I don’t see him. I’m in the store all the time. Ruth sees him. She sees him too much. She was at Sunnyhurst today getting cigarettes and aspirin, and there he was. She can’t even go out for cigarettes and aspirin. It’s killing her.” keep seeing Strout walking in the town make Ruth very upset and immersed in sorrow.

“when Strout came around it alone Matt got out of the car, giving up the hope he had kept all night (and for the past week) that Strout would come out with friends, and Willis would simply drive away; thinking: All right then. All right” This sentence shows that Matt actually doesn’t want to kill Strout, because he has an expectation of if Stout came out to the parking lot with his friend than he wouldn’t have to kill him.
