CS604. CS640- Representation of the Real

Submitted by: Mahnoor khan

Title: Use of Instagram and its tools to alter the representation of external reality.

Research Question:

What are the ways (features?) in which Instagram offers the ability to manipulate the existing reality in order to promote wider public viewership?

I take it, Noor, that your essay aims to demonstrate the ways that users of Instagram can manipulate and falsify images. And furthermore that you impute a motive to these falsifications – that these users believe that falsifying images will make them more popular, have I got this right? This is going to be tricky to prove, especially the motive. It will be easier to argue that some users believe that by falsifying images their posts will be more likes, shares and comments. Let me further suggest that for this essay to be effective, you will need to demonstrate it in the specific (ie. through actual examples from Instagram, using actual accounts) and not speak only generally about the capabilities of the platform and about how abstract users might use it. Finally, note that manipulation of photos and videos has been widespread and common across formats and platforms for a very long time so your essay will need to demonstrate what is specific to the Instagram case and what that might tell us.

Plan of Research:

The research will be conducted on a qualitative basis and for academic purposes. Secondary sources such as journals, articles, magazines and editorial publishing, etc., will be used for referencing. The theoretical framework expected to be used in this research is that of social network and exchange. The discussion will be developed through the content analysis of authentic sources.

Annotated Bibliography

· How does it relate with my project?

This article discusses the use of social media in filtering and polishing photos being published. It also focuses on the roles of these tools in Instagram becoming culturally prominent.

· How will I use this in my project?

The notion of augmented reality (AR) involves objects that reside in the real world which are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information. I will be using AR as my major argument or the starting point. I will also link it to the background of people’s interests and changing perspectives on Instagram. In addition, I will ensure the concept illustrates the idea of filters becoming virtual cultures.

· How does it relate with my project?

The article is valuable in describing the rise of small-scale celebrities across various fields in Instagram. It relates to the use of gender notions that have been broken to meet demands. The article also discusses the concept of popularity.

· How will I use this in my project?

This article explains the idea of Instafamous: the way in which these small-scale celebrities use Instagram as a medium for content creation to become glamourous and fascinating. It will be used to particularly reflect upon the gender stereotypes that have been broken with the emergence of Instagram filters. I will argue how these stereotypes are prevalent on Instagram.

Association between the use of social media and photograph editing applications, self-esteem, and cosmetic surgery acceptance. JAMA facial plastic surgery, 21(5), pp.361-367.

· How does it relate with my project?

Photo-editing and video-editing are key tools that are used in handling media uploads. The article provides a detailed account of these and sums up the reasons behind filter prominence worldwide. It also explores how Instagram affects the well-being and self-esteem of an individual through the use of filters.

· How will I use it in my project?

This relates with my project as it explores a critical understanding of the editing tools that come to commercialize Instagram’s sales. It will help in justifying the real idea behind editing content. It also explores the concept of photoshopping, which can contribute to low self-esteem and distort one’s reality into something factitious. This can be used to examine how identities are formed and practiced in society.

Bell, B.T., 2019. “You take fifty photos, delete forty-nine and use one”: A qualitative study of adolescent image-sharing practices on social media. International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction, 20, pp.64-71.

· How does it relate with my project?

This research focuses on the trends among adolescent age groups when using Instagram on a daily basis. Therefore, it stresses the idea of the physical attractiveness (PA) stereotype: that physically attractive individuals possess more positive qualities and experience more satisfying life outcomes. It also highlights the ways people are driven toward visual ethics.

· How will I use this in my project?

I will use the findings obtained in this journal to support my discussion on the pros and cons of Instagram upload tools available at present. The notion of self-representation connects with the idea of physical attractiveness, both of which have emerged as new upcoming trends on Instagram. I will also explore the reasons behind the upsurge among peers.

· How does this relate to my project?

The qualitative study published in this journal is highly useful to help develop an analysis based on the research. The topic can therefore utilize valuable statistics which can be incorporated in the analysis.

· How will I use this in my project?

This source will be helpful in many ways. The article will be utilized to understand the problems associated with the frequency at which media filters and cinematic effects are being used. This study also explores the theoretical framework of “uses and gratifications theory” as a common method among qualitative studies. This is relevant to my project as it analyses the varied reasons behind why people share photos online. It also illuminates the idea regarding the presentation of one’s true self on Instagram and the effects on people’s life satisfaction and overall wellbeing.

· How does this relate to my project?

In this article, the use of filters in the Instagram platform is critically discussed at other social media platforms like Twitter. While discussing the concept of credibility, the article argues about trustworthiness, which seeks to identify whom to trust. This publishing focuses on the criteria which govern the use of manipulations to play with people’s trust.

· How will I use this in my project?

The main idea behind including this document is to detect other possible problems or cases where situational instances are provided on the topic. This article will also help build an argument regarding the source credibility that information may or may not come from trustworthy users; for example, online celebrity endorsements on Instagram are perceived to be credible and trustworthy when communicating marketing messages.

Fox, A.K., Bacile, T.J., Nakhata, C. and Weible, A., 2018. Selfie-marketing: exploring narcissism and self-concept in visual user-generated content on social media. Journal of Consumer Marketing.

· How does this relate to my project?

This research focuses on the concept of “Narcissism”, which is always a key driver of people on social media. It stresses the idea of self-involvement, which causes people to post their selfies and photos most often. Instagram filters are the best example of the rising interest in self-content.

· How will I use this in my research?

I will use the concept of narcissism in my project because people use Instagram to exploit and enhance their own self-image, which is another key concept of my project. Similarly, this research will also be used to analyse the growing surge of visual generations and their associated implications on larger communities.

Singh, S. and Srivastava, P., 2019. Social media for outbound leisure travel: A framework based on technology acceptance model (TAM). Journal of Tourism Futures.

· How does this relate to my project?

This article discusses the use of the technology acceptance model (TAM) in a larger context as Instagram offers photo editing features to create more desirable results. Thus, this article also highlights the behaviour of users towards technology adoption and speculates about the change in the use of accessible phones.

· How will I use this in my project?

As explained above, the idea of the technology acceptance model (TAM) is also used as a marketing tool for adoption. The article covers the model, which will be a priority for me in the assessment.

Stojanovic, I., Andreu, L. and Curras-Perez, R., 2018. Effects of the intensity of use of social media on brand equity. European journal of management and business economics.

· How does this relate to my project?

This research focuses on the processes involved in the editing and uploading of films and contents on Instagram. It covers the ways in which people use the filters available to present their content online. Thus, the article will help in determining the intensive use of Instagram tools by commercial organizations.

· How will I use this in my research?

This relates with my project as this research talks about the roles played by commercials, which have been replaced by Instagram and other contemporaries recently. Thus, the functional evaluation of the ultimate goals in businesses, which is to sell contents, can be analysed. It will be used by me to ensure the extent to which filters and films are being used by brands to promote themselves at cheaper rates. Further, it will be used to signify their merits effectively.

Robinson, A., Bonnette, A., Howard, K., Ceballos, N., Dailey, S., Lu, Y. and Grimes, T., 2019. Social comparisons, social media addiction, and social interaction: An examination of specific social media behaviors related to major depressive disorder in a millennial population. Journal of Applied Biobehavioral Research, 24(1), p.e12158.

· How does this relate with my project?

The article is focused on prioritizing the contrasts and comparisons affecting social media interactions. It is relatable to my project because the key purposes of Instagram filters are to enrich the external appeal, which is why they are prominently used by peers and youth. Therefore, the article is expected to help in deriving a clearer view on the depressive or mental implications of such filters in the real world, which causes various complexities in the normal lifestyle.

· How will I use this in my project?

This source is particularly applicable to my project as it illustrates the social influences to be discussed using theories such as Social Exchange or Social Network. Also, I believe it will provide abundant knowledge on the challenges and their consequences in the long term, which will affect the rising micro-celebrities across the globe. It is also intended to show an inference that draws on the roles of filters in determining perspectives.
