As defined by Whitney (2018), Emotional Intelligence (EI) is "the nurse's ability to identify people's emotions from their expressions, including body language, facial expression, and spoken word. Self-awareness, according to Goleman (2019), is "the 'keystone' of emotional intelligence" and the "foundation of personal growth and success" (Change Management Coach website, 2019, para. 1). Being able to recognize and understand your emotions empowers you to control them instead of the emotions controlling you. Having self-awareness means understanding yourself and recognizing what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Change cannot occur if you are not self-aware (Change Management Coach website, 2019).Behaviors exhibited by someone with emotional intelligence are confidence and assertiveness. When you are assertive, it "does not mean you always get your way but rather that you convey your thoughts and ideas confidently and justify why you believe a particular decision or idea is the right one"(Management Coach website, 2019, section 2). Daily reflection, keeping a journal, and asking for feedback are all ways in which you can develop self-awareness. Awareness of self-offers the capability to appropriately react to change (Management Coach website, 2019).

I work in a hospital where nurses felt the need to bring in a union. nurses have the option to participate or not participate in the union. This means, not all nurses pay dues because they choose not to participate, however, they are still protected by any contract that comes about due to the union negotiations. An example of self-awareness would be a nurse leader, who stands up for the nurse working next to them, who is being bullied or harassed by a union nurse for not participating in union activities.

When the nurse leader lets the union nurse know that her actions are inappropriate, that each nurse is entitled to their own decision to participate in the union or not, and asks the union nurse to stop their actions, this shows confidence and assertiveness on the nurse leader's part.

Emotional intelligence signifies the nurse's ability to correctly acknowledge people's emotions from their expressions, including body language, facial expressions, and spoken word (Whitney, 2018). There have been five characteristics identified of emotional intelligence that have been proven to be helpful for leaders. These characteristics include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Self-awareness is described as the ability to understand personal emotions and how they affect others. Self-regulation is emotional control (Whitney, 2018), or thinking before you act and redirecting impulsive decisions. Motivation is described as the desire to achieve one’s goals and the ability to continue when faced with difficult obstacles. Empathy is an innate ability to sense and understand the emotions of others (Whitney, 2018). Social skills are the ability to listen and respond appropriately during conversations.

A leader who has a high degree of self-awareness is an asset to a department. In high stress situations it is normal for people to become overwhelmed. Sometimes people become irritated or say things in a way that it might come across harshly. However, a leader who has a high degree of self-awareness will be able to see that their actions and behaviors are coming across wrongly and would address the situation and apologize. A good leader knows when to own their wrongs and knows when to take responsibility and apologize for wrong doings.

Within the health care environment strategic planning is a necessity to reach future goals (Helbig et al., 2018).  In order to continue to improve within a constant changing field, organizational leaders use strategic planning which entails looking into the future, outlining goals, and developing a process to reach those goals (Helbig et al., 2018).  With strategic planning an organization seeks to continuously improve on itself (Helbig et al., 2018).  An organization without strategic planning falls behind, lacks up-to-date processes, and does not improve their patient outcomes.  Future planning can be affected by budgets, the level of staff expertise, levels of care provided, and time (Helbig et al., 2018).  Should an organization lack a higher level of staff expertise, educating newly hired staff can be difficult and ineffective.  An organization with a lack of expertise can experience more costly mistakes.  Frequently going over a budget can decrease opportunities for the organization in the future and further limit a future budget.  An organization also needs to be aware of the level of care that is provided within and ensure that the care provided is consistent to the highest level of care possible.  To identify an organizations strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats an analysis called SWOT can be utilized (Helbig et al., 2018).  By utilizing a SWOT analysis an organization can identify factors that may influence future planning in a negative or positive manner.

Post 6:

The healthcare environment is dynamic and faced with immense challenges that hinder health care delivery, and in need of continuous process improvement. To achieve great strides in the health sector, strategic planning is critical to realize future goals. Strategic planning being the process where organizational leaders purposefully look into the future, set goals to achieve and a clear way of achieving the set goals (Whitney, 2018).  Recently, technology is taking up the space to effectively solves some of the challenges we are faced with thus strategic planning enables health organization align themselves with goals that embrace technology with the aim of advancing delivery of care. For example, health facilities should strategically plan on how to adopt telemedicine to reach to as many patients to improve their outcomes now that the facility is overwhelmed with many chronically ill patients.

Strategic planning is the cornerstone of leadership or management position hence nurse leaders should fixate to the long-term goal today to effectively improve delivery of care while implementing everyday actions that actualize the goal ("Overview of strategic planning," 2012). However, a number of factors affect future planning and should be looked into. One is budgeting. The organization needs finance to buy and install technologies that improve delivery of care. It is, therefore, up to the leadership to align with stakeholders and well-wishers to get funding to implement the future goals, say adopting telemedicine to reduce too many hospital visits. Another hinderance to future planning is level of staff expertise (Whitney, 2018). To be able to actualize the technology deployment and improve delivery of care, the staff should be equipped with expertise and relevant skills. For this reason, the organization should support nurses and other health professionals with financing to engage in life-long learning and skill development to align themselves with the future goal of advancing how care is tailored. A tool organization can use for effective future planning is the SWOT analysis too. It will help in understanding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats with regard to a project goal hence helping towards setting and achieving realistic future goals.
