In the period of adolescence there is a time where the image of a person’s body is well noticed. This awareness happens and the thought of health is also brought up in someone’s mind. Body dissatisfaction happens when a person see’s the ideal body weight that they would like to be or the goal that they want to achieve. Typically most people are not okay with their bodies so they have things and goals that they want to get to. When it comes to body image a person typically doesn’t have to explain what that is because it is already understood. Body image concern’s a person’s weight or body shape. In this article body image is defined. Studies have shown that people who do not like their bodies see themselves as unhealthy and say that they do not have good health. Low self-esteem and depression are also seen. When a person is overweight their main focus on why they don’t like their body is typically only weight concerned and nothing else. When they are overweight their main concern is losing weight and they take any precaution to achieve their goal. When it comes to most normal weight individuals their focus is to be even smaller even though their weight is okay. Age also has something to do with body dissatisfaction. Males mature and care less about their bodies whereas females mature and care more.

Body image has become a very large topic in the past 35 years. This topic has become very important because body image comes with a lot more negative problems. Eating disorders and health issues become more prominent in people who have body image issues. Body image only became an issue because it brings more awareness to a persons body so it changes how people act towards their bodies. If someone thinks that they are overweight they starve themselves or become anorexic and this leads to health problems. Body image can be extremely detrimental to a person who is not comfortable with how they look. A person does not care how their body is treated because all they care about is how their body is going to look in the end. Psyhological changes also has an effect on a person’s body image through their mental thoughts. When a person is going through their times and ages of adolescence their mind is changing as well as their body. The culture that people grow up in targets their bodies in the certain type of culture that has evolved in the world. This thought process of the world has a negative effect on a person’s mental health. The most seen and documented decline in self-love when it comes to a persons’s body has been seen at the age of 19. Body image become important also because of a teenager’s time spent on the internet. Studies show that the internet and any type of commercialized advertisement have un realistic images for a persons body and what its supposed to look like. Girls age 13-15 became more obsessed with their bodies when they spent a lot of their time on the internet.

Wagner, Charles, et al. “The Relationship between Instagram Selfies and Body Image in Young Adult Women.” First Monday, journals.uic.edu/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/6390/5620.

The perception on what a female’s body is supposed to or should look like has changed a lot over the years. At one point being the thinnest person was the best way to look and be, and it was that way for an extremely long time. Then the trend of being extremely fit came along as well. The latest thing is being extremely thick with a big butt and a small waist. This idea of a perfect body started on a big social media platform, Instagram. Social media has created a whole different way that women are supposed to look. Social media gives the women to opportunity to compare themselves to other famous women in the world. Social media is also way more interactive then broadcast media, so it is open for more negative comments to reach a person. Social media gives off a false sense of reality and personalization to the person behind the account. It encourages users to be themselves but it can also have a bad disadvantage. When a person see’s all of the unrealistic body images it tends to have a negative effect on them. Social platforms have created the “selfie” and it is a picture that a person takes of themselves of their face. It shows a persons emotion is a quick picture whether they are happy or sad. Eventually a person becomes obsessed with how their selfies look and upload more and more of them everyday.

Celebrities have a very big impact on young women. People who are famous are always in the public eye and their bodies and appearance’s are seen constantly. These people are considered to be role models to some women body wise and this is where body issues can come into play as well. Their beauty and body weight almost always differs when it comes to the amount of money they make and where they are in their career. The ideal of being thin is very prominent in Hollywood when it comes to female celebrities. In leads and other campagin’s the lead is typically extremely thin an beautiful. This is an unrealistic standard because a lot of people do not look that way in real life. The images of women that are produced are extremely unrealistic and one of the reasons that lead people to depression and eating disorders. No matter what a beautiful person will make something sell and that’s the main problem. The industry is not worried about what the persons looks will do to another individual, they’re just worried about what the outcome will be for whatever they are trying to get to sell. Images of thin women are everywhere so they are very hard to ignore, and this causes bad problems with body identity at a very young age. Being thin is showcased in almost everything in the world so young individuals are surrounded by it growing up in their everyday lives. Since people become obsessed with being skinny, the weight loss industry does extremely well in selling products that will make someone lose weight in the most unhealthy way.

“Self-Esteem and Body Image.” Center for Young Womens Health, youngwomenshealth.org/2012/05/30/self-esteem/.

Good self-esteem is very important for an individual especially young women. Having good self-esteem and being comfortable in who you are can help with not caring so much about the image of one’s body. It also helps with courage, power, and the confidence to do something great in life. When it comes to having low self-esteem talking to someone can help a person feel better with who they are whether they talk to a close friend or something of more importance. When it comes to having a better body image most individuals are told to just live a healthy lifestyle. It is important to tell that the way a body is shaped in not having a better body image whereas taking care of your body in a healthy way is. Keeping a positive attitude can also help from focusing so much on the bad when it comes to how a person’s body looks. Setting goals can help with how someone looks at themselves because instead of thinking that things will happen overnight they can pace themselves and know that they’re working towards something. Knowing that a bigger picture is coming helps keep a person’s mind off of what their body looks like now and instead they focus on what it will look like in the future.
