End of Course Individual Paper & Presentation

First Come, First Served – Get your paper topic to your instructor ASAP.

This assignment is worth 200 points in total towards your final grade. 150 for the written materials, and 50 points from your presentation.

All parts of the assignment must be submitted by 29th November 2021.

You have been hired by a food manufacturing company to create a new food item related to a specific target population. Before you can start product development, you must understand the needs of that population, and propose a path forward for the development of the product. In order to do that, you are required to;

1. Select a target population

2. Review epidemiology and dietary requirements for that target population by doing a literature search of the peer reviewed literature available.

3. Summarize the characterizing nature of that population and how that condition or state impacts the dietary restrictions or otherwise of that population using the materials obtained through the literature search (see previous step).

4. Identify what food products are currently available for your chosen target population, who has “space” in that market, what are the challenges, what products are currently winning, and why.

5. Identify the “new” product that you would pitch for that specific target population. What is the insight for that new product, and what is the idea that you would recommend to the food manufacturing company that should be developed with a view to launch?

6. In anticipation of gaining approval from the company to begin the development process, draft a New Product Development Brief so that all team members involved can be clear about the project and it’s objectives.

7. Lastly, propose a set of processes for how you might bring discipline to this project from idea to launch. What tools would you suggest? Provide a draft of what these would look like and suggestions as to how they would be used.

Potential Choices of Target Populations;

a) Elderly

b) Celiacs

c) Diabetics

d) Vegetarians

e) Pregnant and Nursing mothers

f) High Blood Pressure patients

If you have another population that you would like to study, please ensure you discuss this with the instructor and get approval before you start. You do not have to limit yourself to these ideas, however you do need approval for your chosen population.

Instructions

The Paper

The written paper is to have five sections;

1. Your research on your selected target population;

· 2 to 3 pages of content

· References required (not included in page count)

· Use of APA format from in-text and reference page citations

· Must use at least 4 articles from peer reviewed journals

· Textbook articles may also be referenced

· Internet sites will not be accepted as a reference

2. Your research on the products that exist for this population today, market trends, and a definition of a potential opportunity and design parameters

· Approximately 1 page

3. A draft Product Development Brief

· Must be no more than 1 page

4. Your assessment of some key areas of focus for the project, such as regulatory requirements.

· Approximately 1 page

5. A proposal for how you might ensure the development process can operate to enhance the potential success of the project and engage all the stakeholders

· Approximately 1 page

· Approximately 1 page for draft versions of the tools that you would recommend be used to provide structure and discipline in the process.

Your paper format is to have standard 1”margins, standard font, and double spaced.

You do not need a cover page.

Quality and thoroughness of references/articles will be evaluated and scored.

You are encouraged to use diagrams and or models in section 5.

The Presentation

Prepare an oral presentation to be presented to the class about the same target demographic you researched for the term paper. Explain clearly how you went about identifying the insight that led to you deciding the type of product you propose to develop. Define the aspects of your target demographic that will influence the features of the product that would be developed for them. In addition, ensure you highlight key development challenges that will need to be overcome.

• Presentation must be 12-15 minutes in length

• Power Point and/or other visual aids may be used for the presentation.

o Handouts encouraged.

o Presentation materials must be submitted for assessment along with the paper.

• If there are “two-sides” to an issue, both sides must be presented. You may agree with one side, but both sides still need to be presented.

See rubric on Canvas for detailed requirements and evaluation criteria for both the “Paper” and the “Presentation”
