Syllabus Addendum
Professor Nancy Santiago
June 29, 2020 to August 23, 2020
CRM 499 ~ Senior Seminar in Criminology
Please note that this Syllabus Addendum supersedes (overrides) some of the
items listed in the syllabus.
Professors have the right to alter some aspects of an assignment; therefore, please
refer to this Syllabus Addendum for the following assignments.
*Please email or call me if you are confused or have any questions!
Late Work:
Please read the section on pages 14-17 entitled “Late Work” for extended information
about how late work is treated and how to inform me on Monday regarding late work!
***IMPORTANT: For written assignments (papers):
The first time a student turns in late work, there is a 10% deduction in points. The 2nd time a student turns in late work, there is a 20% deduction in points. The 3rd time is a 30% deduction in points ~ and it is quite possible I may not accept a 3rd late paper, depending on the circumstance.
Always email me FIRST for instructions on how to submit a late assignment!
Discussion Postings
I require a minimum of 200 words for the response to the main Discussion posting. I
require a minimum of 100 words for a response back to another student.
*200 words for the main posting. The responses to the main discussion thread question must be a minimum of 200 words in length and answer all parts of the question. *100 words are required for a response to another student. The two postings responding back to two different students must be a minimum of 100 words in length and add something substantial to the discussion. How do you grade the Discussion postings and Responses? *The way I grade is to first read the posting, then I do a word count to check for the 200/100-word requirement.
Stating phrases such as, “Hi Mandy! Great post! I agree with you! Thanks for sharing!”
would not count as four sentences. None of these phrases would count towards the 4
complete sentences requirement!
Try to be unique in your postings to the two students; do not simply re-write the same
thing twice to both students. Please do not “re-write” what you stated for your main
posting. Your responses should add something unique and substantial to the material
for the week.
Asking a student a question or for clarification is fine, but it will not count towards the
100-word sentence minimum for a response. I have had to enforce this because I have
seen students merely writing 5 questions for a response: “Did you like being an officer?
Was it scary? Did you shoot anyone? Did you ever get hurt?” and this will not count as
an acceptable response to a student.
*I do require students to write the name of the student that they are responding to in the
response posting, such as “Bob”.
Draft Presentation: (Week 7)
I require 6 PowerPoint slides for the Draft presentation. I do not want “Notes” to be
written on the bottom of the slides…that kind of defeats the purpose of a ‘slide
presentation’ if everyone has to try and read the ‘notes’ at the bottom!
*Keep the presentation simple, to-the-point, and interesting for the audience. In a real-
life situation, you would be speaking as you deliver this presentation to the Governor
and you would fill in between the bulleted areas on your slides with further information
for the Governor.
Formal Presentation: (Week 8)
I require 10 PowerPoint slides for the Draft presentation. I do not want for “Notes” to be
written on the bottom of the slides…that kind of defeats the purpose of a ‘slide
presentation’ if everyone has to try and read the ‘notes’ at the bottom!
(Same as above for Week 7)
Grading Rubrics for Assignments
These are all provided on the course shell under each week’s assignments. I cannot
alter these since they are “embedded” into the course shell ~ but the only ones that
would be affected by this Addendum are the Week 7 and 8 PowerPoint presentations,
since I only require 6 and 10 slides, respectively.
My hope is that you will enjoy CRM 499 and feel very satisfied about the investment of time and effort you have made in the class. I look forward to working with you this term!
My personal goal each term by the end of the semester is to have helped improve the way a student writes and expresses themselves in their papers (while following the APA
Style!), and to encourage students to think outside of the box and view different perspectives when it comes to criminal behavior, why people do the things they do, and how we can help them change. If I accomplish these items, then I am happy, as those accomplishments make ME feel good inside.
Our journey begins! See you online!
I hope you enjoy the first week. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nancy Santiago
