3. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major economic or business news relating to India?

The first economic news relating to India is the approval of the issuance of equity shares by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd which own IndiGo airlines. These shares to be issued will be up to 33.6 million. Of the 33.6 shares, 22.4 million will be issued as fresh equity shares and the remaining 11.2 million shares will be offered for sale.

I feel like the issuance of the shares is a sustainable way of distributing wealth amongst the citizens of India. The story is well presented because it shows how the distribution of the shares will be done in figures and to whom.

Automobile sales growth has shown to improve in a large way. As at August, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) indicated that there was a growth of 13.76% was recorded compared to August last year. This indicates that the automobile industry is growing at a good rate and is projected to perform better in the future.

I think that the growth of industries such as Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) indicates that India is in a good economic path. When the growth of the economy is good, this means that the level of poverty also decreases. I feel interested in this story because India is known to be one of the countries developing a high rate in the world (Bhagwati, & Panagariya, 2013).

4. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major political news in India?

Prime minister Narendra Modi has been accused by the Congress of insulting India’s achievements for the last 70 years. This was after Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was accused of belittling the prime minister in his speech at a US university. However, Congress leader Anand Sharma said that it was Rahul’s democratic right to criticize where he felt it was necessary.

This story is relevant because it shows a reflection of how Indian leaders think about the country. It is the responsibility of each leader to show the right leadership path through which other citizens should follow.

5. What new information have you found related to religion in India?

Hope for humanity rests on the Lord’s word of promise to redeem the mankind from samsara. He proclaims in Krishna avatar that he will redeem every person who surrenders to him unconditionally. In the Varaha avatar, the Lord says that all his bhaktas who asks for help from him will be protected by Sankalpa.

I think that this story is very relevant because it tends to create stronger faith for the Hindu religion. The story is properly presented because it outlines how various human events will lead them to get help from the Lord.

6. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major health news relating to India?

The major health news relating to India is the research conducted which proved that the e-cigarettes with nicotine may cause a serious health issue to the users. It may cause the stiffening of the arteries in a person’s body which may expose a person to the risk of getting heart attacks and strokes later in life.

The participants involved in the research helped in proving the result. They were given e-cigarettes which contained nicotine to smoke. 30 minutes after smoking, there was an increase in their heart rate, blood pressure and stiffness of the arteries. This wasn’t the case to the participants who smoked the e-cigarettes without nicotine since they didn’t have such side effects. The research proved how the e-cigarettes with nicotine may have an immense side effect in the users’ later life. The study found out that there was a significant increase in heart rate and blood pressure in the participants who smoked e-cigarettes with nicotine. They also experienced the arterial stiffness.

I found the story relevant because we are living in the world whereby cigarette smoking has become a common habit. Therefore, learning more about cigarettes is important so as to share ideas that could help reduce the health effects of the habit.

The second health news relating to India is the report by Geeta Pandey showed that today, Indian families have improved their eating habits and diets which will greatly improve their health. Malnutrition among women has been a major issue affecting millions of poor homes; such problems are intended to finish in the future. According to the survey, campaigns that have been held focusing on improving nutrition level have proved to bring positive changes.

I think that malnutrition is a major concern for India. I felt the story is of concern to me because I find it important being part of the solution towards reducing malnutrition. The story has been presented in a good way which makes it easy for the reader to gain basic knowledge on how to curb the problem of malnutrition.

7. During the past week (or since your last entry), what has been the major news story regarding to the environment in India?

A report by Anca Balieti and Prateek Mittal has shown that India has 61 million stunted children. This has been mainly caused by indoor air pollution from burning solid fuels. To make the story worse, there are many cases whereby deaths are reported from the pollution. Fumes from the solid cooking fuels affect children lungs which directly lead to stunted growth.

I feel like it is the responsibility of the government and also citizens, in general, to put an effort in ensuring that awareness is created on such matters which are avoidable. For example, indoor pollution is avoidable as long as people are educated on how to avoid it and also use better ways in cooking. This way, stunted growth in India may reduce.

8. During the past week (or since your last journal entry), what other news story did you find interesting?

The story that I found interesting is the murder of senior journalist and activist Gauri Lenkesh. This has been a trending story all over the country leading to suspicion among the citizens of India. Due to this, hundreds of citizens came together to protest with the main objective of wanting to know the cause of her death. The Protestants felt like they have been betrayed because of the freedom Gauri was trying to fight for. After being interrogated, some of the Protestants felt like there were some people in the authority and power trying to create a totalitarian state.

The main reason I found this story interesting is since I felt like it is every citizen’s right to have the freedom of expression. Therefore, the government is responsible for ensuring that every citizen is free from the danger of murder when he/she is trying to fight for the right of the people.
