Problem/topic
Falls are a significant concern for healthcare providers, especially in rehabilitation hospitals, as they can result in serious injuries and have long-term consequences for patients and families.
Assistive technology has emerged as a promising strategy to reduce fall risk among patients with mobility impairments, but there is limited research on its effectiveness in rehabilitation hospitals.
Despite its potential benefits, there is a need for further research on the effectiveness of assistive technology in reducing fall risk among patients with mobility impairments in rehabilitation hospitals.
Community background
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Rehabilitation Research Hospital in Illinois is conducting a research project to study the effectiveness of assistive technology in reducing fall risk and improving patient safety.
Assistive technology is a promising strategy to reduce fall risk, but there is limited research on its effectiveness in rehabilitation hospitals.
Literature Review
Problem/topic
The study by Chen et al. (2022) identified factors that increase the risk of falling and presented a valid assessment tool for healthcare providers in rehabilitation hospitals.
The study by Rios-Fraustro et al. (2021) emphasized the importance of evaluating intrinsic factors, such as cognitive impairment and dependence, in older adults to identify fall risk accurately.
These studies are pertinent to the research project of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Rehabilitation Research Hospital.
Solution
The systematic review and network meta-analysis by Dautzenberg et al. (2021) identifies exercise and assistive technology as measures associated with fall rate reduction and underscores the importance of assistive technology as part of multifactorial interventions in fall prevention.
The article by Fotteler et al. (2022) highlights the need for further research on the effectiveness of assistive technology on frail older adults and underscores the importance of considering individual needs and the effectiveness of the specific assistive technology for the targeted population when implementing interventions to reduce fall risk.
Solution
The solution is the intervention to reduce fall risk among patients with mobility impairments, which involves the use of assistive technology devices such as walkers and canes, bed rails, grab bars, motion sensors, and emergency response systems.
Implementation
Recruitment
Patients with mobility impairments and at risk of falling will be identified and targeted for the implementation of the intervention.
Intervention
Identify appropriate AT devices for each patient based on their needs, preferences, and available resources.
Acquire and install the AT devices.
Train patients and their caregivers on how to use the AT devices properly and safely.
Monitor the effectiveness of the AT devices and make adjustments as necessary.
Assessment
Assess the effectiveness of the AT devices in reducing fall risk among patients.
Monitor patient satisfaction with the AT devices and address any concerns or issues.
Regularly review and adjust the intervention as needed.
Future Implementations
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank my Preceptor who endorse this project and felt that it would be beneficial to the unit. I would also like to thank the Medical-Surgical residents who provided feedback on my intervention.
