Title of your Project: Investigating solution to reduce OHS risks for new employees at ALD- a demolition company in NSW

1. Brief Context/Scope

Background:

ALD Services PTY Ltd. is a demolition company based on NSW. It has been providing its services (demolition and construction cleaning) since 2008. It has around 120 employees working as a demolition and normal labours.

In the last 2 years with the addition of new projects the number of the new employees has raised significantly. With more unexperienced and rookies employees joining the company, the number of the accidents at the working sites has also increased. The main factors causing this problem has been identified and listed below:

· Lack of supervision by the onsite supervisors

· Lack of demolition and OHS(Occupational Health and Safety) training for the new employees

· Use of the demolition tools in improper way

· Physical overexertion and fatigue as they are new to the job

Management Problem/Decision to be made:

· The management problem of this ALD Company is the increasing number of injuries of new employees at working sites.

· I am trying to find out the common mistakes made by the new employees that leads to the accidents

· I don’t know what safety training and manuals are handed to the new employees and how they are inducted in the sites before they start the work. We are also trying to find how well the site supervisors provide instructions to these employees.

· The safety of the employees is important for the company. Injured workers can have negative impact to the growth of the company.

3. Your proposed Research Question (RQ)

Research Question: How and why the new employees at ALD gets injured at the working sites?

Research Objectives:

RO1: To determine the causes of the accidents and hazards in the work sites (new employees)

RO2: To identify the best available methods to minimize the accidents and hazards

RO3: To explore the different OHS training and inductions available for the new employees

RO4: To make recommendations to the ALD management team for effectively minimizing the risks faced by the new employees.

I can find a number of studies related to OHS training and inductions for safe workplace. Therefore, we can gather secondary data available on online Journals.

For primary data, we will make a questionaries for the employees that include some OHS questions, their method of work and the instructions provided on site. From the answers we can determine the level of knowledge they possess about demolition and safety. This study will take place at the different working sites of ALD and the main focus will be on new employees. To gather more information the Site supervisors will be interviewed.
