RE: Formal Letter to Instructor

Dear Students,

Many employers require letter writing from employers, and you may find letter writing useful for other contexts, such as letters requesting refunds for a defective product, letters for local politics, or letters to enact change at a school. As one of your first assignments, write a formal letter addressed to me. It should be as thorough as possible, so the length of this letter should be at least one page, single-spaced. (We will cover various formatting options throughout the semester.) Please upload a doc or docx file or type into the provided space.

I am assigning this letter at the beginning of the class to gain a better understanding of you, especially since we are not meeting in a typical class fashion. Given your disciplines(I’m computer science major), experiences, and background, this letter may help me better meet your learning needs.

Address your memo to me and submit to Canvas your responses to the following questions (you may reorder these questions to fit your writing style):

· Tell me in your own words what you think of when you hear the words "Technical Writing."

· What are the results of your survey about being ready for online learning? (Return to previous page if you have not taken the survey.) Given your results, reflect on your relationship to technology in this course.

Here is the survey result:

It seems you have a good sense of self-direction. If you would like to pick up a few more time management skills, here are some tutorials.

You seem to be able to use different types of media, such as audio, to learn in an online course, to solve minor problems or make decisions about your learning, and work in an online group. That requires good communication skills. Here are some tutorials if you would like to pick up a few more relevant skills.

It seems you have good study habits. Here are some tutorials if you'd like to pick up a few more good study habits.

It seems you have good technology skills and should not have many problems accessing an online course. It is still always a good idea to identify a technological support group before taking an online course.

It seems you have adequate computer equipment capabilities. The complete list of hardware and software required for online learning may vary slightly by course or provider. You should check out the specific course requirements before starting any online course.

It seems you have valid beliefs about what it means to be an online learner. If you want to read more on this subject, please refer to the following:

· What do you think are the strengths you will bring to this class and weaknesses you will want to work on?

· How do you see this class fitting into your professional goals?

· Have you taken an online course before?  (Yes) If so, describe your experience?  If not, what do you anticipate will be your experience?

· Do you have any concerns about this class, such as technology, content, participation?
