Explain when, if ever, a court must appoint counsel before compelling an indigent defendant to appear in a pretrial lineup. Must it be before or after showing the defendant's photograph to an eyewitness?
Along these same lines, what must a defendant establish in order to have his or her conviction overturned on the basis of ineffective assistance of counsel? Do you agree with the standard? Why or why not?
