Impact of Net Neutrality on Cloud Computing.

The US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) recently repealed the net neutrality guidelines it adopted in 2015. it adopted in 2015. Net neutrality is a concept that guarantees that all internet traffic gets treated equally. In short, it's the idea that everyone gets an equal playing field when it comes to access to and using the internet. This is especially important in the US where broadband is seen as the primary source of internet access and therefore it's expected that every American will have access to the internet. In the past, ISPs were given some leeway when it came to blocking websites that may have infringed on their interests, but now they can be held liable for any content that goes against their terms of service. The basic Notion behind the concept of net neutrality is that all data should be treated equally, regardless of its content. With net neutrality, the government must uphold the principle that all data should be treated equally, no matter what the content. The consequences of not doing so are scary. Content is free. An entire country will move to a nation without net neutrality if the government fails to protect it. Most modern technologies rely on servers, which are private property. If these private properties are used by a country to block content based on political boundaries, the international community will simply move their entire internet traffic to the United States. Another consequence of a country without net neutrality is that it will not be able to compete in the global marketplace of ideas.

What was exactly repealed?

Net Neutrality Act gave the FCC broader over ISPs and prohibited the following practices:

Blocking: ISPs could not discriminate anything that was against any lawful data by blocking the websites or apps. Throttling: ISPs could not slow down any data from lawful database based on content type.

Paid Prioritization: ISP’s were unable to provide any different services for premium users who would shell out more than normal and to users of slow lane or rest. (Marty Puranik,2018)

How this could impact the Cloud?

As cloud computing quickly moves toward a trillion-dollar market, many are asking how the repeal of Net Neutrality could affect the services that top websites provide to consumers. Some say they could be forced to pay extra fees for an easier access to web data, something that would be bad for online services, which rely on page views to generate revenue. Perhaps most controversial: Elimination of Net Neutrality could bring censorship and government surveillance of its citizens. Government net monitoring already takes place, with the Internet " Great Firewall " deleting undesirable content from our networks. But monitoring and censoring our web activities could potentially be far more restrictive. The Inter Press Service points out, that Google and Facebook already censor content from users who use its services. (Net Neutrality…)
