Abstract

This paper will give the reader insight to what Human Resource Management truly is.

One will also be able to get information on how the company Netflix was affected with

the COVID 19 Pandemic. Research was conducted through online sources. Examples

will be provided. Lastly, Human Resources will be defined.

Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management or HR/HRM is defined as the function in an

organization designed to maximize employee performance in service of an employer’s

strategic objective. Based on this definition, you may have an idea that numerous

companies have been affected by the COVID 19 Pandemic. Just like any company

during this time, there were major stepbacks. Netflix encountered different issues as

well.

When the pandemic hit, Netflix was one of those companies that decided to have

all their employees work remotely. This meant that their HR departments had to rethink

all strategies. From providing all the equipment needed for each employee, making sure

that where each person was, all softwares was accessible. Like most companies,

communication between upper management and the employees had to be at its best. In

addition, this also places hiring freezes, so most companies were not able to expand.

Netflix, specifically, was over it. CEO Reed Hastings, wanted to figure out ways to

get everyone back into the office. Different things were happening behind the scenes,

for example, the sky rocket of subscriptions. This is great, but at the same time, it was

brought to Netflix’s attention that some customers were still being billed the monthly

subscription but were not streaming in over 2 years, in which the company then

canceled those payments. Situations like this, made Hastings want to do anything to get

back into the office. Hastings stated that if he was able to get the majority of this

employee to become vaccinated then that meant back into the office. Working remotely,

social distancing, and getting vaccinated were the easier steps.
